Just wondering if anyone can clarify a few things about its breeding. On pedigreequery.com there is a single line stating "Selle Francais" under this horses info. According to the SF stud book a horse only needs one parent to be an SF horse to qualify for entry. The other can be a thoroughbred, as its sire Dom Alco was. Was the dam Gazelle Lulu an SF? I know this a relatively new breed with quite a lot of tb crosses and is used mostly in eventing. How many generations of purely tb breeding must ahorse have to classed solely as a thoroughbred? Can a horse be both tb and SF? And (purely hypothetically of course), if an SF or even an ISH was good enough, could they compete under rules in GB/Ireland?

Slightly off topic but in 1935 the fillies Quashed and Solerina finished first and fourth in the English Oaks. They were both half bred horses and ineligible for registration in the General Stud Book. In the case of Quashed it marked the first time that an Half Bred had won an English Classic. Solerina went on to win the Stewards Cup and established herself as a champion sprinter.Both were foaled in 132.
Non Thoroughbred horses have always been allowed to race against thoroughbreds on equal terms. In terms of conformation and racing performance many are indistinguishable from registered thoroughbreds. In 1969 it was decided that following intensive research into the histories of half bred families that certain mares from these families should be admitted into the main body of the General Stud Book. The ruling stipulated that these mares must possess at least 8 crosses of thoroughbred blood and that their racecourse performance or that of the families to which they belonged, must be of an acceptably high standard. A new rule was passed which enacted that no foal born after April 1st 1974 should be registered for racing unless it was entered in the General Stud Book or the Register of Non Thoroughbrd Mares. I dont know whether the rules have been updated. |
