TRICKLEDOWN STUD and Catridge Farm Stud are teaming up to offer buyers of their yearlings at next week's DBS Premier Yearling Sale free keep for their purchases until November 1
Paul Thorman: "if it gets an extra bid, it's working"
Trainers, owners or agents who purchase a yearling from either studs consignment can take up the offer providing the sale price is at least £20,000, and will be asked to pay only insurance, transport and non-routine veterinary costs during that period.
Between them, the studs have the largest two consignments at the sale - Catridge Farm Stud has 19 lots entries and Trickledown Stud has 17. The combined total of 36 yearlings means the free keep offer will be applicable to one in 13 of catalogued yearlings.
Trickledown Stud owner Paul Thorman explained his reasoning behind initiative. He said: "All the way through the summer and autumn we've spoken to trainers and the message was that the sale comes quite early for them. The Doncaster sale is where you buy your two-year-old winners, but in August they still have plenty of two-year-olds to run and don't want to have a load of yearlings hanging around their necks. They don't really want to break them, there's no need to break them until October."
The time period between the DBS Premier Yearling Sale, which starts its two day run on Tuesday, and November 1 is just over nine weeks, and surpasses the end of the Tattersalls October Sale by two weeks.
"The trainers were rather luke-warm about buying a yearling on spec and having to find somewhere to keep it," Thorman continued. "The idea of the offer is to say to the trainer that's busy with racing ‘look, we'll help out' with that. I hope it will have a good response. Until you see how it works out you don't know, but if it gets us an extra bid, it's working. I've already had one or two trainers ring up and say they like the offer."
David Powell of Catridge Farm Stud commented: "Trainers don't want yearlings in the yard for an extra two months and coming in while they've got runners, especially when a yearling can bring back a bug from the sales.
"I think it's quite a fair deal as it would probably save them between £1,200 and £1,500. If we get one or two extra yearlings sold out of it, it'll be worth it."
Do vendors think this is a good plan or not?I wonder if in the end vendors will put pressure on Doncaster to move the sale to a later date,not easy I know but for me we do plenty enough with the £500 yearling bonus,could this be the start of us doing yet more to get the stock sold,Doncaster imo need to understand the sale is too early and put it more in line with the other main sales.

Not sure its really going to entice buyers because its not really going to make you buy one of there yearlings just for the sake of it being out of the trainers way for a month or two and other studs can look after yearlings after sales for less, at least with the racing post bonus you have a full year to try and win the incentive that made you buy the yearling. It wouldn't be for me. I'd prefer to try and buy a winner from another vendor

Its not for me either,David Powell is one guy that I get on with and like but the Trickledown lot I can't help but think they try a bit too hard at being movers and shakers,they do a good job but I think coming from where he did Paul Thorman just try's a bit too hard,if my memory is correct Sara Thorman was a very different woman than she seems to be now.
Do you think that the St Leger sale (sorry Premier sale) is too early? Personally I think that it comes too soon. There are many 2yo's that won't have run yet, we have a few, so how are owners supposed to know what stock are going to HIT sales? How do they know what number of horses the are going to be in the market for and of course they still have a few months more in which to win a yearling bonus that can then be re-invested. The keep issue I think has probably done more to illustrate the mis-timing of Doncaster's sale than highlight the 'helpfulness' of Trickledown and Catridge Farm. The publicity will do them no harm ,but I agree, not many will buy from them solely because of this offer. |

The only thing is when is the sale going to be held if it's not on when it is. I think it could clash with a major sale in america because lets face it the agents that are going to Keeneland want something different to those at Doncaster.

That's a good point Rip Van,I'm sure only a handful of buyers in Doncaster will be over in the states,I know is hard to alter the sale dates but I reckon they may be forced to think again,once this 'free keep' and the like starts god knows,what next vendors to pay first six months training fees,you are right it was wrong of me to comment on those two,me and my big mouth!its got me in trouble many times
 as I'm sure you can guess. |

That's true,looking at the sale overall to me it did not bad at all,plenty to encourage us all for the up coming sales,yes you'r right it can be hard but always good fun!!!
