This stallion covered 62 mares in his first year then 49 on his second,are breeders going to give him a chance?Don't know how many he got this year,but being a descent 2y'old then a duel guineas winner is he worth a punt at 4.5k?I have down as a possible for a cheaper mare for next year,but if I do use him I was thinking of about 1.5/2k any thoughts?

prima i am a massive fan. I like the val royal royal academy for some of my mares. Potentially this boy was a super star. On his last run he was winning so easy then hung badly presumably when his bones broke. How good was this horse not sure but certainly worth a shout in my book.

He fractured his pelvis in the St James Palace and still nearly won it, they had him almost ready to come back for an Autumn campaign but from memory, I think that on a gusty day he was standing in the yard and a some type of sheet blew loose and struck him damaging a tendon or something. A really good progressive horse, I don't think the Classics he won were particularly strong renewals but he did it very easily. He was a real strong traveller 1m2 would have been within his compass. A real pity what happened with him, probably never got the credit he deserved as he came from an unfashionable yard.

boba,I tend to agree,his top line would be good with my mare and his 2nd dam being by Miswaki is great as imo he is a good B'mare sire.Im not sure what his mares have been like but a few good breeders seem to have used him.boba have you got any foals/ yearlings?Looking at him a bit closer he seems to get a lot of colts which is good.I too think he could of been a superstar,a breeding partnership in England were thinking of him this year they tell me that 2 main people from the National stud told them to not touch him!Seems a bit strange.

I dont know the politics but there were alot. I remember it was political and it certainly didnt help his first crops.

I agree with people's thoughts that this horse was potentially extremely good and was underestimated a) because he came from a small stable and b) Val Royal has not set the world on fire. He was clearly coming to win his last race and you could see the injury happening in front of your eyes. A real shame. I would use him but don't have a suitable mare to match on pedigree. I would love him to be a success but think he will struggle with the types of mares he is getting. But then again Invincible Spirit did it the hard way.

Could be a commercial horse if his progeny start off well but PD you might be using him the wrong year

I know Rip Van,but at low money I could take the chance,I always have the option of racing the resulting foal,but in a way he may go the right way as you point out.He was so good its mad that plenty of us breeders are so sceptical of him,he is just as likely to have to ability to get a good one as any other stallion.
I did ask Slick to look at him at Tatt's Feb sale at the parade,she told me he is better looking than the stallion book more of him,I have heard he is very much 'the man' but for me that's no bad thing as imo stallions need that bit of assertiveness as they can get a gutsy runner. |

All about opinions but I looked at half a dozen foals last year and not one was worth buying. Lots of ropey national stud partnership mares mind you. As you say £2-3k maybe but I asked and they offered 4k for 2. Goodbye.

I could be critical and say holes all over the place in his form but then again some decent animals he went past aswell, saw him at the Curragh and he was very impressive in looks and on the course that day. Good times aswell in his races.
Maybe he should be marketed to the US turf scene correct me if Im wrong but plenty of US speed in the female side sired by a Breeders cup winner. Would be nice to see him get a few decent mares tho |

It seems that its due to his temperament as they said "he is evil".Would not stop me using him though,but speaking to a few people racing yesterday it seems that the industry does not want him,that said he may just do it,I'm not writing him off just yet! yer ma,What were they like leggy? or rats? good walkers or not?I have not seen anything by him. jmc27,Yes I'm sure he is from a speedy family,I too was at the Curragh when he won the Guineas,he did that very well confirming his NMKT run,btw did you notice the Zamindar half sister to FN won taking a classy scalp on the way! |

He wouldn't be the first stallion to be dificult to manage. What about the likes of Storm Cat and Dynaformer as two well known nutcases. I don't think that's really a reason to be turning nominations away.

Yeah Prima I noticed alright was put off by the drift and the market support for Why. Friends were at the track and said it was a lot more impressive than it looked on the tv as not many have the ability to win where she came from if they do they usually are a classy animal!

A few notes suggest small, weak limbed and incorrect. Clearly wont judge too harshly until see yearlings - ugly ducklings and swans and all that. Dont recall the horse himself being terribly strong looking either

Always looked pretty light framed to me aswell, thought he might make into a better 4yo, reminds me a bit of Canford Cliffs in both racing style and appearance

yer ma,Speaking to people this week racing,your views about Cockney Rebels stock have been confirmed one or two nice ones but plenty who were not so good,I will look at him when next in NMKT along with some of his stock,but I'm getting cold feet about him.

I saw him out of training and quite liked him. Not necessarily your type though PD. A quality horse well balanced but not a beefy individual by any manner or means.
It's a bad tempered sire-line, always has been. Remember the re-joicing amongst the Coolmore boys when Caerleon shuffled off! So that would be an occupational hazard really. It does look like he'll need help from his mares though, he's not an I.S. , Pivotal, D. Dancer who were able to do it the hard way I feel. |
