Sires in Form June

Sorry, I missed off Bahamian Bounty who was on 38 at the end of June with 15 in the month. Danehill Dance now on 48 after 2 wins on July 1. Oasis Dream also a double yesterday on 43.

Cape Cross back with a treble in successive races at Donc. today and I backed them all. Some ammunition for tomorrow.

Cape Cross really rolling now on 58 with 2 more already today, Sea Lord over 7f and Martyr over 2 miles. So game, genuine and versatile.

Interesting stat for Pivotal - I was thinking to myself that he was having a quiet year.  But as you say I suspect it may be because the tracks are so firm.  He doesn't seem to be having as many runners - probably because they in the stables waiting for the rain to fall?

Not sure imagele. There don't seem to be many good Pivotal 2yo's so far so may be the type of mare sent to him has changed or the firm going is stopping them making their debut so far. He did manage a couple of wins from older handicappers, Last Sovereign and Stellite yesterday. Another significant win for Medicean with Caponi who looks progressive.

There certainly is no numerical reason for the Pivotal two year old numbers. He covered 148 mares, and progeny numbers were 102 (split unusually 50/50).

Thanks to both. The info is not easy to get which is why I keep my own records and post on here. All official data includes GB and Ireland combined which means that the Coolmore sires do much better. Official data also concentrates on prize money not number of wins. Galileo and Montjeu never do well on UK wins but are usually top on official stats. Equimine, Thanks for the data on Pivotal. I wonder what is going on there. Perhaps his success has meant that better mares that produce later maturing progeny have been sent and the better 2yo's are not yet ready to run.

Or is it perhaps that Pivotal is not such a great sire that he is marketed as?Standing at 65k he imo looks top heavy for what we see on the racecourse.

I know your not a fan of stats PD, but Pivotal certainly doesn't appear to justify his fee on the numbers. Whilst his general level of progeny is above average, his 90+ rated percentage is below par for the covering fee.
I think I am correct in saying that his current crop of two year olds were covered at an £85K fee.

Yes Equimine he did stand at 85k and that only underlines imo how far too top heavy he is,I think he would be okay at 40k but not a penny more!

IMO he's not outlandishly expensive (no-one should be paying the headline fee).  He's in that middle ground of being a proven sire but not absolute top notch.  If you dont want to pay massive bucks and dont want a foal share then your list at £35-60k isnt that long.  I agree he needs a few more group horses soon though

BTW, equimine without sounding like a spokesperson - the RP stats have Pivotal ahead of most sires of similar fee (or more) in terms of 100+ rated.  18% of runners in the full 2009 season.  Dansili 11%, Danehill Dancer 15%, Red Ransom 11%, etc.  Bloodstock stats to suit every argument of course.

I must admit I find RP stats very simplistic, generally inaccurate and statistically unsound. I doubt that sounds like a spokesperson.
For example their Broodmare stats are just the "sire" stats quoted as the broodmare sire.
I am sure Pivotal did have some 18% of runners rated at 100+, he has stood since 1997 and had 179 horses trying 914 times to get a rating of 100+. Of those only 14were aged three or under. Only 4 of them were 2 years old.

Markington another £10 handicap winner for Medicean. He is really getting up into the top 5 this season and many progeny improving with age. I am following his older horses blind at the moment.

Half way through July the leaders are now:
Cape Cross  60
Danehill Dancer 53
Kyllachy  52
Medicean  50
Oasis Dream  50

As we near the end of the month, the top 10 sires are still returning a lot of winners. Medicean on 54, Pivotal now up to 49 after a string of wins in the last week, Noverre a double today so up to 46. Selkirk now on 33 which is not among the top sires but he is still one of my favourites. Of the second season sires, Dubawi and Shamardal are the clear leaders but Avonbridge continues to impress.

Cape Cross still finding more top class performers with Sea Lord winning a valuable handicap off 106. Must be worth 112 now so Group 2/3 class.
