Well that didnt go well...

Magical Romance, who was purchased for a world-record $9,358,608 (4.6-million guineas) at the Tattersalls December mixed sale on November 28, produced a bay filly foal by [isd]Pivotal[/isd] early Wednesday morning.

The price paid by Lady Serena Rothschild for Magical Romance, winner of the 2004 Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes (Eng-G1), set a world record for a broodmare or broodmare prospect at purchased public auction. The previous record price was $9-million, paid by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum for champion Ashado in the 2005 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

The foal arrived 24 days prematurely at Banstead Manor Stud. By the registration rules of British and other Northern Hemisphere racing jurisdictions, Thoroughbreds all advance in age by one year on January 1. Magical Romance's foal will officially become a yearling less than two weeks after birth.

When she begins her racing career, if she does so in the Northern Hemisphere, she will compete against horses that are six to 11 months older.

"It has obviously come as an enormous shock, and as the foal will become a yearling in ten days time she will be greatly disadvantaged during her early career if she remains in the Northern Hemisphere," said James Wigan of London Thoroughbred Services, the agent who bought Magical Romance on behalf of Rothschild

Magical Romance is booked to Dansili for the 2007 breeding season.

"Although no one can be blamed, it is desperately bad luck for Lady Serena Rothschild and her Waddesdon Stud, but they have taken the news well and are greatly relieved that it is a nice filly and that both mare and foal are fine," Wigan said.

"They fortunately breed to race and will therefore be prepared to give the filly all the time she needs. They are also most grateful to Banstead Manor for having taken this valuable mare to board, as they had made a special exception to their rule of not accepting outside mares," Wigan continued. "They are most appreciative of the professionalism of Simon Mockridge and his staff at Banstead, and sorry that they should have been put through this additional stress. The foal is a bay filly weighing [approximately 81 1/2 pounds] which was up and nursing within one-and-a-half hours and is very perky and unaware of the worry she has caused."

Anyone remember the horse that was disqualified from some of the big two year old races that it had won because it turned out it was born before January 1st and they'd lied about it! Think it was with Henry Cecil and may have been a Juddmonte horse.

Endless Summer. tr. Gosden o+b K Abdullah.

So yes that was what made Magical Romance's unfortunate incident such a delicious irony given her location at the time!
