Something close to 90% of horses running on the flat in the British Isles are descended from him in the male line. I would guess it is now impossible to find one that hasn`t got him in the pedigree somewhere. There might be a few jumpers.

My great (x18) grandfather was probably a Roman Toga repairer - don't feel any great urge to take up the cause though. Best we look a little closer to home for the merits of our current horses!

geek that I am - I have put together a table showing most of the leading horses that have come from 4 of his sons - sickle, pharamond, pharos and fairway

Now into the 11th generation

Is there a website I can attach this to if anyone wants to see it?

apart from Tom Rolfe and Ahoonora sired horses - is it fair to say Phalaris is basically what the modern thoroughbred is about?

to the non-Phalaris influence should state

Ribot rather than Tom Rolfe (Ribot of course had two great stallion sons - Tom Rolfe and His Majesty)

And can also add

Intentionally (sire of In Reality who sired Known Fact)

Balidar (sire of Young Generation who sired Cadeaux Genereux)

It's of course spelt Ahonoora - sire of

Dr Devious (Collier Hill was of course gelded)

Indian Ridge (sire of Namid and Compton Place - watch out for Linngari at stud)

Inchinor (has Notnowcato to preserve his line)

Back to that table I put together the trends re Phalaris' four influential sons - sickle, pharamond, pharos and fairway - are as follows

Pharamond and Fairway despite having initial success have by the 7th generation generally gone into oblivion

Pharos initially being the most successful son through Nearco and also early on through Pharis. Nearco being particularly influential through Nasrullah (in turn having 4 massively influential sons in Red God, Grey Sovereign, Never Bend and Bold Ruler), Nearctic (hitting the jackpot with son Northern Dancer) and Royal Charger (siring Turn To who goes on to sire First Landing, Sir Gaylord and Hail To Reason) and also for a few generations with Dante, Massborough and Infatuation.

Sickle imported to USA has also had a huge impact. Four generations on from Phalaris (same generation as Northern Dancer was sired in) Native Dancer is produced who sires Atan, Raise A Native, Dan Cupid and Dancer's Image. While the Northern Dancer line horses have excelled up to the 8th generation from Phalaris the Sickle sired horses from here really come into their own particularly through Raise A Native sired Mr Prospector.

It remains to be seen whether the Sickle sired Native Dancer's offspring can continue to hold their own and perhaps ultimately trump the three main branches of Nearco's legacy (Nasrullah, Nearctic and Royal Charger).
