It's easy to draw the conclusion that Fabio Capello's resignation almost exactly four months to the day before their opening match against France is a disaster.
Whereas every other manager at the competition(bar the hosts) will have had a two-year qualifying campaign as preparation for the main event, Capello's successor will have just a handful of friendlies available to him in which to find out which system to play, which players to pick, who he can rely on, who isn't his cup of tea. That of course isn't ideal but it may be the lesser of two evils because any confidence in Fabio Capello leading England to the final or better, was surely misplaced.
The Italian is a wonderful manager, his CV speaks for itself. But in hindsight he was never the right man for this job. His disciplinarian...

Before you all start getting carried away with England's 1-0 victory over Spain on Saturday night let me throw some incredible match stats at you.
Depending on which match report you read, the world and European champions enjoyed as much as 71% possession (compared to England's 29%); they had six corners to England's one, and almost unbelievably Spain fired in 22 goal attempts whilst the Three Lions' could muster just two shots on target and one off.
True, from Spain's 22 goal attempts only two were on target, and the most important statistic is the goals scored column; but on home soil, to concede that much possession and have so many shots at goal against you is extremely worrying. Quite frankly Spain are in a different league...

The Dragons welcome back James Collins, though will be without the suspended Craig Bellamy and David Vaughan, while doubts remain over Jack Collison. Darren Bent and Micah Richards are the only absentees for the Three Lions, having withdrawn from the squad over the weekend.

England appeared invigorated against Bulgaria with a youthful line-up and balance to the formation. Scott Parker and Gareth Barry holding in midfield offered greater confidence for the front four - headed by the vivacious Wayne Rooney - and the performance spoke volumes, albeit against poor opposition.
The only points dropped by Capello's men during European Championship qualification came at home, with draws against Montenegro and Switzerland. Indeed, England have not won any fixture at Wembley...

The most encouraging aspect of England's defeat of Bulgaria on Friday night was not so much the result, or indeed the winning margin, but the nature of the victory. It was fitting that England were kitted out in untraditional blue because the way they played was such a departure from their customary pedestrian offerings that for a moment you could have been forgiven for mistaking Fabio Capello's two-toned charges for a visiting Argentina side.
At this point it would be prudent to point out that England were playing a particularly bad Bulgaria outfit shorn of their only guiding light, Dimitar Berbatov, who has decided to walk away from international football in order to concentrate on sitting on the bench at Old Trafford. A competent display by England saw the Three Lions return to winning ways against Wales with a 2-0 success at the Millennium Stadium. The victory took Fabio Capello's side level on points with Montenegro and firmly on course (1.18) to top UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group G - but, in the words of Barry Davies, frankly, who cares?
It wasn't just that England, 110 places higher than Gary Speed's men in the FIFA world rankings, were odds-on to win a complete mismatch, or that the 'should John Terry be England captain?' debate might rear its ugly head for the 12,000th time this week; it was the fact that this viewer, at least, was indifferent to the result. It's become a clichéd argument, but it's backed up by the stats. In the past 12 months, England have started six games with the Lampard-Gerrard partnership, and six games with only one of them. The difference in performance is stark - when only one has started, England have won 66% of matches, and the goals scored per game figure is at an impressive 2.16. When they're paired together, however, the win ratio falls to 33%, and the goals scored per game figure drops to 1.16.
