Just got my first smartphone, and the text message from Betfair downloaded the Android app.

It's totally unuseable. The responsiveness is a joke. Just logging in requires stabbing "Log in" for a couple of minutes before the checkbox loads. And it's odds against managing to pinpoint the precise area of the screen to touch anyway.

As for placing a bet, you could run the Grand National in the time it takes to key in odds and stakes. And there's no option for Betfair SP.

Is there any way of loading and using the old Java application, which you could navigate simply and cleanly via the cursor on the keypad?

Simple answer....no!

That was the first thing I tried when I got my Android phone a year ago as I loved the old java app, and I had it working for about 3 months until they did an upgrade to the app, at which point it now tries to upgrade at the start, fails, and that's that.

Try Zoombet...even better than the java app, and much faster.

Thanks for that. Sad

Have just downloaded ZoomBet, and it's certainly much faster and smoother. Still no Betfair SP available as far as I can see, though.

Sorry to keep bothering you, but could you tell me whether it's possible to change the odds and/or stake on an unmatched bet, or do you have to cancel the whole bet and begin again? Also, is there any way of bookmarking markets? (Though that's less important as navigation is pretty fast anyway.)

At the moment, you have to cancel and re-place the bet.

You can't bookmark at the moment either.

The search facility is excellent for getting to any market very quickly.

Thanks for the advice. I haven't tried the search facility yet, but will do so.

Feeling a bit more relaxed about being lumbered with a smartphone now. The problem is that I switched providers, so I can't just slip my new SIM card into my good old clunky Nokia and access the old Java site.

But I agree that ZoomBet does work well within its limitations. I just can't understand why, like Betfair's own Android app, they haven't incorporated Betfair SP. It's when you're on the move, and distracted or at the mercy of a poor connection, that you find you need fast access to Betfair SP to extract yourself from a bad position when the seconds are ticking down.
