The big question for ages, even more since the Donaghy thing.

How many games per year are directly decided by skewed refereeing? I say out of 1.230 games about 3-5% (37-62 games).

And yes I was prompted by tonight's travesty in the DEN-MEM game.

Refs on DEN-MEM game:

Scott Wall, Tony Brothers, Marat Kogut

Lets see if I can spot the chronic offenders throughout the season Wink

I've never trusted d1(k bavetta personally. Keep an eye out for him.

Thx, yea he is well known for that.

Problem is that only the worst offenders are widely known (so called "company men" according to Donaghy).

I wouldn't trust much that comes from donaghy - he'd say anything to sell a book - but I can believe that. Too keen to be a part of the whole 'nba entertainment' & celebrity rather than focusing on his job.

There was a story some time back about the nba investigating him for being too buddy buddy with certain coaches. Slippery slope!

Actually he said that during his investigation, and besides people (for example Simmons) have noticed those trends ages ago.

As for refs:
- Generally they do decently enough, not great but tolerable.
- Sometimes they call things badly but then immediately and deliberately compensate the bad call on the other side (that has been a staple of NBA refereeing for at least 20 years now).
- Sometimes they at the end of the game start hitting one team (Memphis yesterday) with ludicrous calls and with their freedom to dispense technicals for "arguing" the victimized team can do nothing. Memphis players refused to be provoked but couldn't really overcome losing so many points in such a short time frame.

It's a tough one because the game is so easily fixed it that's your intention.
Most blocks/charges could be argued either way. Whistle happy refs killing the unders etc etc
Multiple refs obviously dilutes the effect of an individual, but how can anyone be sure it's completely clean.

Rugby League refs are the ones. They must have the biggest influence in any sport.

i have come to the conclusion that tech fouls were invented to manipulate lines.
so what if a player mouths off?
refs should/could just ignore that and play on. the player is forced to keep playing as he would look stupid moaning to noone.

Yep I kind of agree with u there pokeron, you see it happen alot in footie, especially when penalties are given..........they should be fined larger possibly or suspended a few games if the player overstepped the line. Never liked the idea of tech fouls, as coaches too can be penalized for over talking

Memphis AGAIN raped by referees. This is now a pattern.

Brutal rape. I guess Spurs needed compensation for the idiotic 250k fine.
