Australian Sports Commission calls for widespread punishments after ball-tampering scandal
Australian Sports Commission has called for Steve Smith and others to be stood down following ball tampering revelations in South Africa.
Batsman Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera rubbing one side of the ball with tape in an attempt to create reverse swing on day three of the third Test against South Africa.
Smith later admitted the plan was hatched by the team's leadership group in an attempt at gaining an advantage.
ASC chair, John Wylie, and CEO, Kate Palmer, released a statement calling for anyone who had knowledge of the disgraceful act to stand down.
"The ASC condemns cheating of any form in sport," the statement said.
"The ASC expects and requires that Australian teams and athletes demonstrate unimpeachable integrity in representing our country.
"The Australian cricket team are iconic representatives of our country. The example they set matters a great deal to Australia and to the thousands of young Australians playing or enjoying the sport of cricket and who look up to the national team as role models.
"Given the admission by Australian captain Steve Smith, the ASC calls for him to be stood down immediately by Cricket Australia, along with any other members of the team leadership group or coaching staff who had prior awareness of, or involvement in, the plan to tamper with the ball.
"This can occur while Cricket Australia completes a full investigation."
It is unclear whether coach Darren Lehmann was aware of the plan, although damaging footage shows him speaking to Peter Handscomb on a walkie-talkie immediately prior to Handscomb running on the field and having a word to Bancroft. Bancroft then attempted to hide the piece of tape he had been using by stuffing it down his pants.
It has been alleged that Lehmann was instructing Handscomb to tell Bancroft the cameras had picked up on the ball tampering.
Smith denied Lehmann had any knowledge of the plan, but implicated the rest of the leadership group in it.

They should announce tomorrow that they're expanded the season to 22 rounds, going from Oct thru Mar. Scheduling a game at Docklands everyday from Dec 26 to 30 in direct opposition to the Boxing day test across the road. |
