Here is a disaster from I think October last year. Made a (late night!) bid on this V8 BMW. Paid $600. Sight Unseen. I'm a man of my word. My Bid is my Bond! Anyway got it towed home. Beautiful car except for one thing. I couldn't start it. Googled for weeks researching tried everything eventually gave up and sold to the wrecker for $300.
Something that hastened the disposal of the car was some busybody do-gooder neighbour must have worked out the car was unregistered despite it having plates and dobbed it into the council. So I had to get rid of it before it got towed away. Fxckin ****!!!

Bought another car a few weeks ago. A 1985 Mercedes 380 SEL. Paid $700. All I've done for it so far is change the spark plugs which made an amazing improvement on how it runs. It's parked a few streets away - haven't been able to summon up the courage to bring it home yet.

Luv those 3 vents/slits on front side ---gives it a great edgey look"

I haven't got any photos of the Merc yet but this is what they look like.

It has a 3.8 litre V8 which is laughably slow over the 1/4 mile but the whole boat is set up for high speed cruising on the Autobahn. Unfortunately I can't find an Autobahn nearby so I'll see how much high speed cruising I can get done between here and Super Cheap Auto.

I haven't seen the Dad since he was on my knee having a feed on Christmas Day 2017.
The Baby eventually got chased away by his own Mum a few months ago.
Now it's just Mum and StepDad show up.

So far nothing has been invented that is fuel efficient and as environmentally friendly and economical as a normal car.
Even if slot cars somehow take over (in real terms not by virtue of taxpayer subsidies) they'll never be the same as real cars. A real car is almost a living being.

Is it government subsidised? The way to wealth in the 21st century. Doesn't matter if anything works just so long as the government pays - just ask Elon Musk!!

I sold the Merc 300E that my son used successfully as a daily driver for $1400. Gave my wife 200 and put 200 into the rego account. 1000 left. I've got no idea where that $1000 is. I cannot for the life of me remember what I've done with it or where I've put it.

Have been taking the XJ6 out for some Sunday runs and it's just a fantastic car to drive. 33 years old it's just so smooth. Even the wife loves it and she's not easy to please. It's a real head turner as well.

For years I washed my car then polished it. Then I learnt of the importance of waxing. So I washed then polished then waxed. Then I read about clay bars. I thought - no. Too much. Sounds weird. Too complicated. Too expensive.
Then I saw a clay bar on special at SCA so I thought I'd give it a go. Wash the car then get some clay onto the fingers and some lube on the paint and give it a go. It's amazing. You can feel it slide over the paintwork and meet resistance. Keep at it till it's all smooth. Polish and wax after and you cannot believe the difference. I used to think my car was smooth after a polish and wax. I was sadly mistaken. The paintwork with a polish and wax and a CLAY BAR is about 100 times smoother. It blows your mind.

I buy Practical Classics magazine every month. It features an array of pommy car nerds such as Sam Glover who spends his spare time breaking down in exotic locations around the world.

The odometer in the ute stopped working the other day - very annoying. I found a useful video on youtube on how to repair. First I bought a plastic gear thingy on ebay for $20. When it arrived I set to work. The instrument cluster has to be removed. First the bezel that fronts the dash has to be taken off. That's pretty easy it's just held in by push-in clips but you've got to be careful with 25yo plastic.
With that off a couple of hidden screws are revealed to loosen up the instrument cluster so it can be pulled out.
Put it on the desk while I watched the video. Remove screws from the back and eventually get out the speedo assembly.
That's the old plastic gear next to the new one. Just do the reverse and put it all back together. Odometer works again!

The white jag is beautiful - looks well kept. Reminds me of some zombie film (which was sh1t) and Bill Nighy's character had this pristine Jag (probably a Sovereign but may have been a Daimler - same shape as the white one on this thread). Loved that shape from the 1960s - 1990s.

Bought this 1985 Mercedes 380SE back in about July 2018. Paid $2000. The bloke selling it only lived 5 minutes away. He was asking 3k in his ad on gumtree. I went over and had a look and he was a nice young bloke and we got on well. The car was good but had a few problems. I asked him what would he take for it. He said $2000. Done!

So since I've owned it I've spent a bit over $800 on it.
The rear muffler was cactus so that had to go. Waited about 2 months to get the new one imported -$400. Also it made this incredibly annoying clicking noise. Hard to tell if it was valves or exhaust manifold gaskets. Turns out it was the latter-thank God! I got new gaskets from a Mercedes Benz dealer for $56 and asked the exhaust guy if he could put them in for me. His reply - "life's too short to do jobs like that!" I considered doing it myself but I could see it was a nightmare. I eventually found a mechanic to do it for $200. So worth it. That loud clicking noise was both annoying and embarrassing.
I've replaced spark plugs, fluids and filters. Also repaired the drivers seat. It had a broken spring so when you sat in it you card hardly see over the steering wheel. Didn't cost anything just three hours of my time but well worth it.

The paint looks loads better in the photos than real life. It has loads of stone chips and stuff on it. The colour is amazing though. I've never seen a red car still look so red after 30+ years. I've seen red holdens turn pink in five years.

The interior is basically immaculate. I've found the hardest stuff to replace is cracked trim and seats and wood and stuff. Mechanical stuff is nearly always still available but finding wood trim in good condition takes ages if at all.

It has a 3.8 litre V8. It's quite quick off the mark has no trouble dealing with modern traffic. Especially in Sydney where millions of Chinese drivers always travel 20km/h BELOW the speed limit.
I feel like the King Of The Road in this thing. It cost $93,000 back in 1985. You could buy a house for that back then. I YAWN IN BOREDOM as I see the roads filled with crap looking $50k SUV's. Or hideously ugly Ford Ranger utes.

I've only recently told the wife that she is the proud owner of a classic Mercedes Benz. I BOTTLED it!!! I parked it in nearby streets for a couple of months. Moved it around and worked on it while she was out. Then I had a BRAINWAVE!! Why park this red car - a colour susceptible to paint fade- out in the open getting rain and sun and bird droppings and tree droppings all over it when five minutes away there is a shopping centre with undercover parking? So that's where I park it. It's like a garage. Except it gets dusty and sometimes pigeon sh1t on it. I leave it there during the week and bring it home on weekends. Should be ok with management. An unregistered Merc has sat in the same spot for three years.
Anyway she took the news of another member of the fleet quite well. Don't know why I was so worried. The fact that it's a top car no doubt helps.
The previous owner has texted me asking me if I want to sell it back to him. I think I will. I paid $2000 spent $800 I'll ask him for $2400. And an assurance that I can buy it back in the future. It needs something done to the suspension maybe he can get that sorted. I wish all car experiences could be as pleasant as this one.

Found that $1000 I mentioned on 8th Sepember last year. It was in my bedside drawer. I never use my bedside drawer (obviously). Anyway I was looking for something else and opened the bedside drawer as a longshot. I saw an envelope in there and very nearly didn't bother to pick it up and look inside. Then I did. And found 10 crisp $100 notes!!

Nothing atm. Sold nearly all the cars. Got the Alfa GTV in a storage shed. Got a Merc 320 coupe that's registered but I never use. I've moved up to Shoal Bay and only got time for fixing up the house.

No. Still happily hooked. You've known me a long time now hazypond. I'm thinking about a decade. Is it likely any woman would not want to stick with me? Imagine getting those good posts every day? I may annoy her most of the time but I still make her laugh!

I sometimes punch a random number and read threads from back in the day. A lot of entertaining people posted some great stuff.
I have an inspiration for a new thread but with the Aussie Forum dormant and the Chit Chat Forum closed there's no point doing it.
