Police bust harness match fixing ring
THE Queensland Racing Crime Squad has charged a man with match fixing after they raided several properties belonging to harness racing participants.
Detectives executed a search warrant at the properties in Warwick, The Gap, Logan Village and Redcliffe this week where they seized mobile phones, computers and documents.
The Crime and Corruption Commission was also involved in the investigation.
A 46-year-old man from Warwick has since been charged with match fixing.
Police are yet to determine when he will appear in court and are expected to provide an update later today.

Harness Racing will be lucky to see it into the third decade of this century - certainly not the fourth.
Curiously I have been on course -Albion Park- last 3 out of 4 weeks and vast majority of winners have looked better than the rest---actually thought was getting more competitive etc.

It'll be interesting to see what evidence the police have collected.

THE defence lawyer of a former harness racing driver fined for fixing two Queensland races has made a stunning admission about tactics in the industry.
Former harness racing driver Barton Cockburn has been fined $5000 for fixing two races at a Queensland track in late 2016.
Cockburn pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday to two counts of facilitating match-fixing and one count of disclosing knowledge.
The court heard Cockburn arranged for himself to win a race at Albion Park on November 5 and for another driver to win a race at the same track on November 12.
The prize money from each race was $7000 but the court heard individual drivers only receive about $350 of the winnings.
Cockburn also disclosed knowledge to “industry insider” Michael Grant on November 4 about a harness race he knew Mr Grant was likely to bet on.
It was not alleged Mr Grant actually placed a bet on the race or that Cockburn would have benefited from providing that information.

Defence solicitor Andrew Hanlon said Cockburn had discussed race tactics with other drivers and Mr Grant before the races.
“It is commonplace, albeit not technically within the racing rules, for drivers to talk to each other prior to the race and try to establish the tactics each driver is going to be employing,” Mr Hanlon said.
“There is a fine line between what is deemed an acceptable level of gamesmanship and what is clearly a breach of the rules.
“His conduct has crossed that line and he is remorseful for his involvement in these offences.” Mr Hanlon said the defence of “everybody’s doing it” was no defence but that was “precisely the situation in harness racing in Queensland”.
The court heard Cockburn, who was once considered one of the top five professional drivers in the state, had his racing licence suspended indefinitely as a result of being charged.
Convictions were not recorded for the three offences.

“Clearly, your Honour would be well aware the defence of `everybody’s doing it’ is no defence at all.
“And certainly we don’t suggest otherwise this morning. However, on my instructions, your Honour, this is precisely the situation in harness racing in Queensland.
“To provide some context to the situation, as I’ve said, my client is racing in 30 to 45 races per week.
“On my instructions, 90 per cent of these races, he would be racing against the same drivers.
“Up to 90 per cent of these horses then, would be from the same stables, trained by the same trainers.

“Now, in a race consisting of up to 10 horses, there may be as many as eight horses from one or two different stables. We’d have three or four horses from each stable in the same race.
“Two or three of those horses in the race would be of a significant ability to be able to potentially win the race, with the rest of them generally there to quite literally make up the numbers.
“In this context, your Honour, tactics become very important in harness racing.
“Different horses race better from the front, getting an early lead, or some prefer to take a sit, is the term, I understand, and try to out sprint the leaders to the finish line.
“Tactics change, therefore, from race to race, depending on which horses are against which, and are often dictated by the trainer prior to the race.”
Mr Hanlon said it was not within the rules to employ such tactics, but the practise was widespread.
However, he said drivers would sometimes renege on the agreements made once the race was underway.
“I understand, your Honour, it is commonplace, albeit, not technically within the racing rules, for drivers to talk to each other prior to the race, and try and establish the tactics that each driver is going to be employing,” he said.
“Of course, there is no guarantee that drivers will be honest with each other, in this regard, and that’s clear, your Honour, from the schedule of facts before the court in relation to charges one and three where the tactics noted or potentially to be employed, weren’t in fact, and the result therefore, didn’t pan out as had been intended.
“In my submission, your Honour, it seems there is a fine line between what is deemed an acceptable level of gamesmanship and what is clearly a breach of the rules and the relevant offence of match fixing.
“It’s accepted clearly, however, by my client’s pleas of guilty today that his conduct has crossed that line, and as I say, he is remorseful for his involvement in the offences.”

A HARNESS racing identity will face court accused of running millions of dollars through a fake betting account.

Watching replay ---and being of the opinion that the better horse won and that Cain's horse was given the cushy run behind the leader this charge wont stick because the outcome of the event would not be any different.
Considering the prizemoney for winning a race at Albion Park is about $1700 it's no wonder there's doins a transpirin.

Winner was due to Grant Dixon brilliance--perfectly rated 3/4 back on the rails----shuffled back to last and weaved through the rump steak---a great lesson for young drivers---

Must admit--for many many decades - I was Albion Park Sat and Wed then Redcliffe Friday but the way races where being run and the tactics used was clearly mates paying back mates etc etc

Frankly his criticism of the Sugars ride is unfair and misinformed --the horse was pulling its head off and had Sugars let it go --would have otherwise charged forward uncontrollably and worn itself down/out--Sugars was leaning that far back that had the horse not been pulling and wanted to take off--it would have just come to a stop...the horse frankly was just not in the right mood.

It does seem imo that Mr. Butterfly's venom is channelled through Letsgoracing website under what appears to be a new column called Wednesday whinge---what was once an informative balanced website now contains highly inflammatory statements against valuable contributors and stakeholders to the racing industry---- anyone familiar with B/fly's previous ravings might recognize this style of language:
