The Federal Government has announced it will close a loophole that has enabled live sports betting on the internet.
In-play betting is only allowed over the phone, but some betting companies have phone applications that allow punters to easily place bets during play.
The Government said it would legislate to ban so-called 'click-to-call' apps, but Human Services Minister Alan Tudge expects companies to cease the practice immediately.
The 'click-to-call' function sees an automated call made within the app and allows bets to be placed within seconds.
"I would hope that they would cease doing this today, because we have clearly indicated that we believe that they're operating against, certainly, the intent of the law, if not the actual law," he said.
"The online environment has the potential for people to get themselves into serious trouble," he said.
The Government said it would also work with banks and credit card providers to identify ways to block payments to illegal offshore wagering.
It also said it would explore working with internet service providers to block access to illegal offshore gambling companies.
"The tougher laws will seriously disrupt the illegal offshore providers from acting unscrupulously or targeting vulnerable Australians," he said.
The Government's announcement comes in response to a review of Australia's online wagering sector written by former New South Wales premier Barry O'Farrell.

In play on racing will continue unchanged dollar 21. Horse racing is a different category to Sports betting.

Thought it was an interesting report
Concerned that the words 'Children/Minor weren't used until page 101,considering that to stop the proliferation of problem Gamblers it should start at future generations.
For those not interested in bookworming.
A)No change(recommended) to In-Play:worth noting that In-Play betting was divided into Horse Racing and Sports with no change to either.
B)The overwhelming theme suggests gambling on EG's(Electronic Games)Casino, and such far outweighed the concerns re;the problem gambler as against those betting on Horse racing(3 codes) and Sports.Which probably validates
1.mouse tapping/thumb massaging sends a physiological euphoric impulse to a human's cranium.
2.conditioning and disparity between real and fantasy probably started in a human's earliest days and has impacted on the 'mind numb'EGames of chance i.e.Pokies.

A good section on the leakage of revenue to Offshore unlicensed operators.

Anyway a good read to get a better handle on the whole gig.
Does give a realization that the culture of past Australians has been the real driver in the Locust of UK based betting agencies stripping our hoot.Topsport got the nod as ridgy didge dinki di.
Apparently some 190+ illegal offshore operators trying to get into your wallet.
Saturation of Advertising got a mention also and as we know it's works best when humans are ....sleeping.
plenty of submissions from vested and non-vested interests,Aust Wagering Council sounds official but is made up of suits from sportsboat and the likes.
From my perspective it confirmed that Pyrmont St and the Bros Inc dominate NSW racing.

Li is the govt of today but would make no difference if Li,La or Byron tree huggers were in power.the submissions came from far and abroad an of varying denominations.

At least when you go to the Casino and bet on a "two horse race" (ie. red or black, odds or even) you get even money.

With the bookmakers when you bet on a sporting match (2 horse race) you never get close to even money(or an overound of under 105%).  Yet they spend a fortune on advertising.

Sadly that ain't the correct maths,if it was we would all be there making the most of it.
Not a 2 horse race when you have a Zero as a 3rd option.

true. Still better than bookmaker odds though.  Craps and black you can even closer to even money. Wink

So roulette isn't a true even money bet but your odds are still better than a sports bet with bookies in an event which is a true 2 horse race.  Sadly.

Why would they give existing customers fairer odds when they could put that money towards copious amounts of advertising.  Just so we can have some paid-for d*ck head get on the tv and tell us where the money is going.

So if it weren't for 00, eightball would be at the casino just killing it on the roulette table with true odds.  Here I was thinking it was a game of chance.

Interesting discussion and one with many perspectives.

Casino odds +++FIXED IN STONE....

With the bookmakers when you bet on a sporting match (2 horse race) you never get close to even money(or an overound of under 105%).

Fortunately despite whatever the odds offered they are merely odds and not truely representative of the horse's actual chances....unlike say odds / even

Study hard and record keep ...

There will ALWAYS be horses with 5 per cent chance of winning  being offered as a 20 per cent chance etc..... you will end in front...wait like a seagull for that little discarded chip and bounce...I mean pounce....

Casino games are pretty much games of chance and all have a house edge built into them.

Sports and horse race betting are skill based and also have a house edge built into the odds by bookmakers.

I was just trying to point out that the house edge in sports betting is bigger and you're further away from the true odds.  Instead of offering better odds they choose to spend what seems like a lot of money on advertising.

If we're in such need of protection from these gambling options that are available to the rest of the world (and to us over the phone),

if it's really about protecting us, why not ban gambling companies from advertising or sponsoring sporting events or teams like what was done with alcohol and tobacco.

yeah sure go after illegal offshore wagering but why should that mean in-play betting over the internet (and not just over the phone) cant be viable.

I thought this law was around before the advent of online sports betting anyway.  I thought it was mainly to stop people from using online scam casino and (untaxed) pokie sites and wouldn't really be relevant to games of skill such as sports betting.  Also why are you allowed to bet on a horse race in-the-run over the internet but not a game of sports (over the phone you can), what's the difference?

Don't go Chinese Whispers on me.
I was citing you if it was Red/Black or Odd/Even never mentioned the numbers 1 to 36 etc.
Have a listen to one of the World's best Bill Benter at
"What Are My Odds?" - William Benter ICCM 2004 you tube it.
Good that he chose to share the Mathematics of all probabilities with those who care to listen.
Also about the Advertising I can't recall which pages in the report targeted but there were numerous and again it's well worth the read.

...than say odds at the casino.  As henry pointed out though fortunately horse race betting and sports betting is a skill based game where you can swing things in your favour given the right amount of skill/systems/patience.

It doesn't seem like it's been particularly constructive with regards to online inplay betting, which I'm guessing is the aspect that most people here are concerned with.

On the serious side Henry.

You've lost 2 houses and I would guess relationships due to your addiction.

At what point are you going to decide to stop.

This isn't me having a go. I'm just saying what you need to hear.

You have an addiction.

You need treatment.

More specifically ...homes...not just houses....

Cheers woopi..great wife 34 years..

Curiously also pre- betfair.....Certainly would be doing something different if could not lay horses.

Anyway point of the matter is that ringing for a in play bet is more measured approach for those in their 30-40's.

+Personally against protectionism however well a ++NBA match from about 2 weeks ago comes to mind...Miami Heat at half time 1.04 ...unbeatable lead and yep....lost the game

As a conspiracy theorist I can not be changed in my view the match was manipulated for in play betting purposes....

Again just sayin

you've certainly learnt your lessons the hard way henry. As my mate Wayne the stopper says day after day after day ....... they just "don't". Referring to all those good back bets that just didn't in the past. I feel you've learnt that laying those shorties that just should, but don't ....... is very profitable Grin. good luck to you, i hope you win enough to buy a few more homes and taste the sweetness of the negative gearing facility while ur doing it Wink

The frustrating thing is that all the people who make the decisions and the people lobbying them seem to have very little understanding of what in play betting on sports via the internet is. If pollies and their ilk are so clueless on this issue what else do they legislate on that they've got no idea about?

No political parties allowed, we vote for the Ministerial positions based on applications narrowed down from everyone who qualifies to be able to apply for each ministry. So, the few people running for the Minister of Education position, all would have experience in the education sector, same with Health, Sport & Recreation, etc. We'd all receive their short resumes and vote for the best person based on that.
