For the benefit of hardly anyone, I thought I would give this last bastion of Bookie vs Punter it's own thread.
Been going for longer than when Ned had the ultimate necktie,in fact word has it he got on for a few pounds/dollars several times, courtesy of whoever's funds.
To see the entire perimeter of Central Park over flowing in a smallish town is testament that what ever formula they have used has stood the test of time.
The rort's of animals pales secondary when you have a rort involving humans and no better than in the 'lead-up' to Australia's oldest foot race.
The wily old trainer and his 'fleet of foot' kid in some far off paddock with an old stopwatch months prior built toward the ultimate pinnacle.
For the 1st prize of Minities? Hell no, throughout the years Bookie vs Punter has been a the backbone of the Stawell Gift.
Every Orstraylian slang term was used in preparation for the plunge/s.
I could fill the page with what took place over the years but you can use your imagination and then add some.
So good luck to those still involved on Easter Monday unfortunately all the above is no longer but still the race grows, prize money wise, making it Australia's richest foot race.

Tasmanian duo through to semi-final on day two of the Stawell Gift Jack Hale in his heat at the Stawell Gift, April 4, 2015 Tasmanian sprint star Jack Hale has gone through to the semi-finals at the Stawell Gift after finishing second in his heat. The 16-year-old finished second to Bikramjeet Singh who won in a time of 12.47 seconds and had a tense wait to see if he qulaified. The winners of each of the 22 heats automatically qualify for the next round as well as the next 22 fastest times. Fellow Tasmanian speedster Jacob Despard had no problem progressing after winning his heat and automatically qualifying. Despard outran rival James Woodgate by 0.17 of a second to take his heat in a time of 12.38 seconds. Hale is a headline runner at this year's 120-metre Stawell Gift. The long jump specialist burst onto the sprint scene when he broke the national under-18 record for the 100 metres at an interschool meet in Hobart in September with a time of 10.44 seconds. Two months later he shaved .02 seconds off that record. In December, Hale ran a wind-assisted 100 metres in 10.13 seconds — a time that was the world's fastest recorded for the distance under any conditions by a youth athlete. But the time could not be officially recorded because of the wind assistance. Hale is now ranked by the International Association Athletics Federations (IAAF) as the sixth fastest youth in the world and he still holds the Australian record. Hale also holds the Tasmanian men's open 100 metres record. |

On Easter Saturday the heats are conducted, with the winner of each heat going through to the semi finals along with the next best fastest times. On Easter Monday the six semi finals are run approximately 2 hours before the final with semi final winners only advancing to the final. (Six semi finals were first run in 1988, before that there were only five semi finals.)
The Gift is run on a 120m grass track in front of the 100 year-old Stawell Grandstand, and the athletes run in lanes that are separated by lane ropes rather than painted lines.[1] The idea of the handicap system is that all runners would theoretically cross the line at the same time. Gambling is allowed in the venue,  and there is an extensive bookmaker's compound.While the Stawell Gift is the feature race, the meeting also includes many other races, with more than sixty events taking place over the three-day meeting The first winner 1878 The inaugural winner was William J. (Bill) Millard, a farmer from Condah, Victoria,[6] [u]who trained by chasing kangaroos[/u]. His great-grandson, Daniel Millard, won the Stawell Gift in 1997. |
