NSW racing authorities will re-open talks with the TAB-owned Sky Racing after splitting with fellow TVN shareholders in Victoria.

Talks between Sky and TVN, which holds the media rights to racing in both states, broke down a week ago and Sky has been unable to show racing in NSW and Victoria in TABs, pubs and clubs.

TVN is jointly owned by the Australian Turf Club, Victoria Racing Club, Melbourne Racing Club, Moonee Valley Racing Club and Country Racing Victoria.

Racing NSW also has a presence on the board.

"I think it's fair to say discussions (with Sky) will be ongoing from next week," ATC chief executive Darren Pearce said.

Yes Sydney hosts looked doomed immediately. Vics may get a short reprieve but they could all be soon gawnnnn

Vic crew's only hope is if Channel 7 picks it up, but will they be interested without the Sydney races ?

End of an era, sad in many ways, especially happening at christmas.

This is a simplistic way of looking at it but how do you walk away from a channel that you're a part shareholder of to negotiate with the opposition?  Not saying that it won't be better for the industry as I really don't have a detailed knowledge of what is going on but it seems Racing NSW has blinked and just jumped ship (possibly for good reason).

It seems the punting dollar clearly bullied that of the TV rights which Mr Mann thought held so much currency.  I guess he was the only one who did not know that.

Have to say not going to miss Adrian Dunn and Dean Petit.  In terms of TV annoyance/lack of ability on a scale of 0 to Rove McManus they are right there at the top of the tree.

fkn shamozzle ...

an industry out of unison ... dont care who's right or who's wrong (if that's even the case) ... but ffs it the 21st century and punters are living in a divided industry that can't help itself out of continual alienation with those it seeks to court

what must the new breed of young punter think

anyway  ...

TVN released the following statement

Racing Victoria released its reasons in the following statement

and RNSW through Peter V'L released its comments

more still to come from a fractured industry ... no doubt

As a young punter I'll give my thoughts. Victoria seems to get what I want from racing. NSW seems to go the complete opposite way.

I am a member of ATC: the price of which has gone up 27% YoY with not a single increase in the quality of offering. We are the only customer segment with any growth potential and it is baffling. I have not had a single customer survey, net promoter score survey etc sent to me in all my years. They don't miss the opportunity to spam my email though (which is a dangerous game to play with people who have emails set as alerts on a work phone).
I watch TVN exclusively because I punt on premium racing I.e Saturday metro thoroughbreds. I hate sky because it has turned a premium day of racing (Saturday) into a high volume low quality product (back to back racing from whoop whoop).
I bet with Betfair, corporate bookmakers and on track bookmakers. If I want price I got to Betfair, if I want a deal I go to a corporate bookmaker, if I want convenience I bet with an on track bookie.
I also own a number of horses that I have bought from sales, syndicators and bred.

no surprise Vlandys would side with Tabcorp Angry

the future of racing is about growing the pie and finding new markets - that means quality racing coverage for free on a website that anyone anywhere can access

alternatively

let the bookies/betfair show the races and pay a % what they make from it

it's not rocket science - if Racing NSW thinks they can survive on the backs of punters in pubs and clubs they are dreaming. Not that those people shouldn't be able to see the racing, of course they should - find a way to let that happen

in moderation Joel, evil machines for those hooked on them

i knocked off from work at noon on Wednesday and went to the pub for a drink or three with colleagues - the pub has a few screens but doesn't have TVN so I didn't bet on Sale or Warwick Farm - whatever happens they need to find a way to get coverage into venues as well or they'll lose casual punters

Sky Racing and TVN rights agreement

AN interim agreement has paved the way for Sky Racing and TVN to carry Victorian and NSW race vision.

The pictures will be provided while the parties that share in the ownership of TVN — the Australian Turf Club, the three Melbourne metropolitan clubs and Country Racing Victoria — work through the disaggregation of the broadcast rights.

The ATC and Racing NSW, who oversee NSW country and provincial rights, withdrew from TVN on Christmas Eve, just one week after TAB subsidiary Sky Racing walked away from negotiations for a long-term deal causing a blackout to its home and pub/club audiences.

Dont know much except to me TVN bunch cowboys filtering industry money to friendlies....

Remember their purchase of Winning Post and Best Bets for 12 MILLION DOLLARS almost immediately after their well known associate Peter Sidwell bought Winning Post for 2.4 m (while also owning Best Bests)

Peter Sidwell. On September 30, 2006, the wealthy Melbourne businessman and racehorse owner bought the racing magazine Winning Post for $2.4 million. He already owned another well-known form guide, Best Bets, which was breaking even or making minimal profits.

The two magazines did not stay long in Mr Sidwell's stable. Within weeks, he was negotiating to sell them to pay TV company TVN, which is owned by Victorian and NSW racing clubs. His timing was impeccable. It is unclear exactly when TVN chief executive Peter Sweeney decided to buy the magazines,......

Documents obtained by The Sunday Age show that TVN paid $12 million, with an added $2 million "earn-out fee" payable in 2009 if the publications reached Mr Sidwell's future earning estimates. While both Mr Sidwell and Mr Sweeney describe the deal as a win for racing, its timing — and the price paid — have caused rumblings in the racing world.

[i]At stake are the broad questions of how well, and by whom, the business interests of racing in Victoria are safeguarded and whether conflicts of interest affect decision-making.

On that deal alone TVN should not have any rights to do anything connected to the racing industry.....Lots of the cake sliced behind closed doors IMO

BIG Richie Callander, the most recognised and colourful of TVN’s presenters, said staff were in the dark and concerned about their futures as the demise of the racing channel moves closer.

“We’re the same as everyone — we’ve got no idea what’s going on,’’ he said.

The NSW and Victorian shareholders of TVN agreed they would dissolve the TVN board on Thursday at a meeting in Sydney.

Staff will be paid entitlements in full, but jobs — including those of some familiar presenters — are certain to disappear.

“I’ve sort of given up worrying about it. I’m a lot better than I was for the last month — what will be will be,’’ Callander said.

“But we’ve all got families and mortgages. I think the Melbourne guys might be sweeter than those of us up in Sydney, but I guess it all comes down to what decisions are made from now on. It’s not just the on-air people. The whole production comes out of Sydney.’’

A date when the racing channel will go off the air has yet to be announced.

Sydney’s Australian Turf Club owns 50 per cent of TVN, while the other half is split between the three Melbourne race clubs and Country Racing Victoria.

Racing Victoria chief executive Bernard Saundry described the issue as a “work in progress”.

“We have just agreed to continue to work toward an amicable solution where each state has agreed to manage its own media rights,” Saundry said. “The discussions are ongoing and they are amicable.”

Both states are in talks with Tabcorp-owned Sky Channel, plus Channel 7.
