You are kidding mate they're style of playing has improved already  its going to take a very long time, most of those players are totally devoid of confidence and they were unquestionably one of the worst teams in history, it takes a long time to for fitness levels, skill levels to reach the required standard while at the same time learning a completely different style of play and achieving the levels of professionalism required to succeed.  What did you think was going to happen today, they always going to be nothing but witches hats against the eagles who ar at  the very least a top 8 team the gap between those sort of teams and the bottom of the barrel is a gaping chasm.
Seriously think about what you;re actually saying before writing it., Paul Roo's is nothing but professional and if anyone is capable of resurrecting them it's him. Just building self belief and the confidence to take the instinctive first option alone is going to take a lot of time.
Anyone who thought Roo'swas just going to come in and wave a magic wand was seriously delusional.

Already there is evidence that he's getting through to them, they produced a couple of really nice ball movements during that game and there is no doubt that their repeated defensive efforts are better than last year already but it certainly isn't going to happen overnight.

Freo would pay that in a heartbeat for Frawley as would GWS, Dogs, Bombers, etc, etc.
Quality big defenders don't grow on trees and he would slot into any good club lacking a quality tall defender or as club that has one who is on the verge of retirement. Realistically what incentive has he got stay at Melbourne, another three of years of misery, there's no way known I would be staying. A player like Frawley would be absolutely craving success and having the opportunity to play in a real team rather than a dysfunctional mess would be extremely appealing.

My question is what if Mitch Clark suddenly overcomes his depression in a year or so and decides he wants to play AFL footy again and is fit and healthy he's 27 or 28 is a proven big forward you can guarantee that there are some clubs who would be happy to take the chance on him. He's uncontracted as his contract has been paid out, what's stopping him from in a years time going to play with a genuine contender for base contract plus incentives?

Not saying that he would but theoretically it could happen.

I would be depressed too if I had injuries and had to play for Melbourne as well,Laugh for those who think that's in poor taste it is said very much tongue in cheek but those facts alone are enough to make anyone feel depressedLaugh

Report Lets Elope April 8, 2014 12:53 PM BST
in some aspects
Report junior007 April 8, 2014 1:18 PM BST
Lets Elope is correct here.

What did people expect from a team who have the close to the weakest list and several very crucial players missing from one part of the ground, and on top of that learning a radically new game plan?

I would think we could see a series of very respectable performances from Melbourne later in the season if they get any joy with injuries at all.  That is just cruel to lose 3 good quality tall forward options like they did.

You take the best 3 tall forwards off any list in the lower bracket of the league and see how they go.  The melbourne players are flooding back, winning the ball at times, looking up and seeing something like Shannon Byrnes with a taller opponent on two extra defenders nearby.  They just don't have a reliable way around that right now.

Give Demons a more normal injury profile, say losing Clarke, one midfielder and one decent defender, their team might look like this:

Terlich Frawley Trengove

McDonald Garland Grimes

Blease N Jones M Jones

Toumpas Dawes Howe

Kennedy-Harris Hogan Spencer

Jamar Tyson Vince

i/c  Bail Cross Evans Michie

Injured Dunn, Watts, Viney, Clarke

I reckon even with Clarke gone, and three first choice players missing, about an average amount for a team during the season, this team I have named would start to look competitive later in the season as they become more accustomed to playing together.  We are not talking about them beating challengers here but more than capable of competing with 12-17 level clubs, which would seem like a decent step forward.  You start adding a few more high draft picks and some strategically selected free agents over a couple of seasons and you have the makings of a truly competitive team.  And the teams with salary cap space will be able to lure good free agents.

Roos cannot be held responsible for the playing list right now and especially not for the crippling injury list.  He is there teaching Melbourne how to set up a successful footy club and three rounds is not even near enough to judge whether they are heading int he right direction.

I can't see any reason why Melbourne won't improve over the coming years.  Where it takes them, who knows.
Report tyre kicker April 8, 2014 1:30 PM BST

Report Lets Elope April 8, 2014 1:46 PM BST
Mate you are kidding Roos is about the only guy who can resurrect them and even with him at the helm it's going to take a very long time, just to get them to consistently train in a professional manner is going to take a very long time for that lesson to be learned and consistently adhered to. Dee's haven't so much gone backward as everyone else has improved again as well which is why in my opinion some clubs such as the dogs, north etc have been caught out in early games when they thought they were training hard by last season standards but the problem is that bar has been lifted again, there's no doubt that some clubs i.e. hawks, bombers etc, have taken pre season fitness to a new level again.
Report Charkitz April 8, 2014 11:44 PM BST
I get what you guys are trying to say but I honestly think you need to be a Melbourne supporter to truly realise how hopeless our situation is... It's a frightful mess. Don't think anyone's arguing that Roos isn't the man for the job but he'd need atleast 5 years to turn this club around

But the fact he's only committed to 2 years is a killer blow. It's pretty hard to convince players to stay on when they don't really have any idea what direction the club will be heading in in 2 years time. They must be thinking what's the point in learning Rooseys gameplan when someone else will come in and start all over again
Report Charkitz April 8, 2014 11:51 PM BST
And the culture of the club is the real problem, not the players. Why is it that of all the top 5 draft picks we've had none of them develop properly, regardless of who the coaching staff were at the time ie Travis Johnstone, Brock McLean, Colin Sylvia, Cale Morton, Trengrove, Watts etc whereas players such as Scott Thompson, Darren Jolly, Jared Rivers etc all of a sudden become guns when they go elsewhere.

I don't think a player that has played at Melbourne in the last 15 years has reached anywhere near their full potential. If you were a player about to get drafted by an AFL club you'd be praying not to get picked up by Melbourne.

There's no doubt that Tom Scully and Scott Thompson left because of our poor culture and I also wonder if the likes of Wonnemeari, Liam Jurrah and Mitch Clarke would still be in the system if they hadn't have ended up at our club. Even the way we treated our most loyal players such as Brad Green, Cameron Bruce and James McDonald was despicable, treating your most loyal servants the way they did only only adds more toxins to a an already toxicated culture.

I really believe it'd take Roosey atleast 5 seasons to turn the clubs culture around, maybe more
Report earlycrow April 9, 2014 12:05 AM BST
This may well have already been said I haven't read everything posted, Melbourne need a complete rebuild, which is very hard to comprehend given the quality of the people that have been around the club, Tom Scully left because of the culture in the playing group, he arrived at the club and could not believe how unprofessional the playing group was, I believe it took a few weeks for him to arrive at this opinion. Paul Roos has been bought in to try and set up the Sydney model at the Melbourne football club hence why the club want the next coach around to build on that as Horse has at Sydney, what happens on the field is window dressing, the tail has waged the dog for far to long

The first thing Jamie Bennell said when he arrived at the Eagles after having been cast adrift by the demons like so much rubbish having done his knee and being out of contract at just 21 years of age was that he couldn't believe the difference in professionalism across the board but especially in training standards and that was last year and the Eagles have gone to another level in regard to training again this year under Simpson, there is a gaping chasm between the standards in professionalism that exist at the consistently successful top clubs and a few not all but a few other clubs.
Report Charkitz April 9, 2014 5:31 AM BST
That's hardly a new thing at Melbourne though. When Chris Heffernan and Gary Moorcroft both joined Melbourne in 2003 they both noted how they couldn't believe the difference in professionalism between Essendon and Melbourne and that was at a time when we were playing finals every second year.

Since then I can't remember a single Melbourne player joining another club and not commenting on how much more professional their new club is. It's gunna take a long time to undo the unprofessional culture that exists at Melbourne now.

There's a big gap between the top 4 teams and the teams from about 12th to 17th. Then there's another massive gap down to where Melbourne is. Make no mistake, Roos won't have the time to lay down the necessary foundations to make us a successful club again unless he extends his contract to 4 years minimum
Report junior007 April 9, 2014 5:55 AM BST
It's not always a matter of one person doing the whole job.  To make radical positive changes to the way a large group of people behave and perform is a difficult and energy sapping task.

It is not something you can expect one person to complete start to finish.  It is more a case of getting many people to contribute something positive in sequence, one thing at a time.  I've been involved in attempted resurrections at country sports clubs.

The first thing you need is sensible people making decisions off the field.  Then they need good support from people prepared to pitch in.  Then you need a training culture that improves players know how, skills and fitness and the team's performance.  Then everything falls into place, sometimes quickly and sometimes more slowly.  What you find is new people come to your unfashionable club and like the way things are set up, and then you know you are on the right track.

What a lot of clubs do is try to layer playing talent over an administration making poor decisions and a poor training culture that improves nobody.  It appears Melbourne have been guilty of this.  But now they appear to me to be putting the right things in place.  If they stay on the right track then substantial improvement is inevitable.

Report Lets Elope April 9, 2014 10:07 AM BST
Do your own market just keep laying them at every opportunity in each games if you dont think think they'll win a game all season and keep all upping the initial outlay you should end up with a reasonable amount by the end of the season especially if they're in a match and look competitive, lay them in the run etc, etc. All you're risking is your initial outlay be it a 100, 1000 or whatever.

Yep he needs to stay on for another three years, they've gone backward again after making some real progress. Think they need to offload Watts while he's still got some real currency (best for both parties, he would invaluable at a good club)and keep Vince and Jones obviously and maybe one or two of the older bad era players but the rest just have to go it's a taint that's still lingering over the club.
The younger players were carrying them earlier but they've inevitably run out of steam and they're group is slipping back into the same old negative mindset, those players just have to be cleaned out and Roo's needs to stay at least another year if not on top of his existing contract to complete the task otherwise they may as well fold them up now.
Another season like this next season and Hogan and co. will say there's no way I'm going to stay here and waste my career putting up with this shiit and if they start to lose this next generation of talent it will be an unmitigated disaster and they may as well pack them up.
