Khan, Want your Opinion of Salute the Wind? Every time i see it run it should of won the race. Does the Driver never try? What you pay for it? What State would b best for it. My Mate backs it every start and said he has lost that much on it that he could buy it. I said Why dont we.
Lloydy, cant drive trying every start family pet good luck trying to buy it. i backed it in all its early runs plenty of ability got something out of it twice.

gunyh's comments sound spot on. Has a great sprint and would go to ffa class in the right stable. Would love to see how it handles Menangle.

Llody it got beat a lip at $14. I would have won a new car.
I'd value it at $25k which may seem high but it's a good horse who has been looked after and there's a fair chance it could go a long way.
El Paco is a big chance and should be thereabouts but the trainer driver on board has me wary. I won't be on.

This race tonight looks at the mercy of whoever wants to win it.
Put a good driver on Salute to Wind and he works forward and wins for fun, but because Ron Gilligan is a trainer driver he doesn't know that. He'll drop out and have a sleep at the back while the leaders jog, and be a hundred to one.

Seems the same as last prep: Great beginner, tough but no sprint, just a little less rough than he used to be and still a bit scary which is obviously why JJ didn't hit him and I assume got questioned.
Should turn into a solid cups contender, something like that Kilmore 3200m race could be great for him. Not sure about his gatespeed but seems unsuited to mile racing.
Good win Lloydy, well done to all concerned.Seems the same as last prep: Great beginner, tough but no sprint, just a little less rough than he used to be and still a bit scary which is obviously why JJ didn't hit him and I assume got questioned.Shou
Khan, Quickest u will ever see out of the Gate. Id like to see him with a Sit behind leader as can sprint quick. He isnt fit yet. Its been a long Prep for him as he has been in work for a year Has cost us plenty but hopefully pays his way now.

Wow that was painful to watch tonight. Salute the Wind was $1.04 in running but like a typical bad drivers Ron hates the fence so he decided to throw the race away rather than win via the 'cheats' lane.
Good drivers like Chris Lang win dozens of races via the sprint lane every year and one of the reasons it's so easy for him is so many drivers go out of their way to avoid it. My brain struggled to accept this for a long time but it's just a fact.

Does anyone remember the day Apple Beach dropped out of the clouds right down the outside fence to mow them down? Rosemma led that day and Apple Beach went past her like she was tied to the fence.
Without going back through I don't think she has looked like winning a race since, and that was some time ago.
How can a horse look that good and then every other start look like a horse incapable of keeping up with any field

Three starts back when Salute the Wind was a $2.80 favourite it sat miles back while the leaders walked the first half in 65.1.
Two starts back STW was $1.04 in running but Ron took it away from the sprint lane and galloped into another horse looking for space.
Last start the pace was frantic throughout which is perfect for Salute the Wind except Ron somehow found himself in the death and suffering more than anyone from it.
The horse is actually going really well so it's taken some special driving to have it finish ninth, eighth and fifth recently but that's what you come to expect and love from trainer drivers.
Tomorrow night it's running off a massive 50m handicap and the best driver in the world couldn't get it finishing within cooee of the winner of that very strong field. The paper tipster somehow says it can 'lay claim to some winning hopes' but that's ludicrous, it has none.

That was just a monster win tonight, I knew it was good but that was something else. The leader was not mucking around and it gave it 50 metres and came out wide. It is clearly one of the top 5 trotters in the country on ability.
Why on earth didn't they run it in the Kilmore Trotters cup a couple of weeks back?
It underlines even more, if that were possible, how extraordinary the last three drives on it have been.

Tonights race is AWESOME. Vice Cheval is a very good trotter and Paris Pepperell should have won easily last start and has a big hope too.
STW has never won at the track, doesn't like sprint trips and prefers stands to mobiles so you can't get your hopes too high. On the plus side, he's in scorching form and has recently discovered a little gatespeed.
What should Ron do? After much thought I think he should go forward. He could take the lead from Paris Pepperell but Maori Vacation looks the probable leader to me and I suspect it will not be handing up to anyone except the stablemate, which is a fair problem. In that case Ron should just stay in the death and try not to work too hard, which isn't easy. Vics Cheval will probably make a move and you basically have to hand up the death (and probably lead) to it and then try to beat it from the death which is quite difficult.
The other option is to do what he usually does and drop out and hope for tons of speed which might happen but is extremely risky over a sprint trip.
Either option seems valid so hard to see how Ron could get things too wrong tonight but his record is not encouraging. Will be fascinating to see what happens.

Ron decided to drop out to last and was a billion to one every step of the race. It's extremely difficult to win trot races like that, you need a lot of things to go right that are out of your control. Being a trainer driver, Ron seems unfazed by this and is happy to keep doing it and praying for luck.
Trainer drivers don't do form for their races so have no idea if going forward or backwards is best for a particular race so inevitably just do the same old thing every start regardless of the opposition. That's what makes backing them at short odds such a disaster.
However Ron went forward at Melton three starts back and the horse ran great, so it obviously can work hard, it just almost never does. After studying todays Gunbower Cup race it is clearly a race where Ron has to go forward to be any hope. Kvintet Avenger is a master at stacking them up and reeling off a lethal last quarter which is exactly the kind of race STW hates most when sitting back last. If it's handed the front (as seems highly likely) then the race is over as there's no Aiken or Manning type runners who might put on the slightest pressure.
Ron taking the front and holding it would make him favourite to win. Taking the front and handing up would seem to guarantee second at least. However the chances of a trainer driver changing their tactics to suit the race are a thousand to one so expect him to drop out to last and pray for miracles once again, which is a shame.

STW galloped out and was last at the bell so given the leaders ran a last half of 57.6 it was impressive he got anywhere near them. In form like that you could say he's a huge chance in a big 12 horse TM0 at Melton on Sat night but we also have to take into account Rons' form (which is never encouraging, see above).
STW has a poor mobile record (mostly due to endlessly being last at the bell) and has the ultra grim record of 19 starts at Melton for zero wins and one second so nobody should be raiding their piggybanks but I'll be very interested to see if Ron at least given him any hope. Sitting back last in a huge field while T3s dawdle up front will certainly result in disaster again and Ron has long demonstrated extreme comfort with situations like that when a more experienced driver would be going forward.

Yes I hinted at this awesome Kieseyfest in the Candy Digger thread! Shame about the two scratchings but still, can't wait! Popcorn is being buttered as we speak.
STW was very well driven by Ron! Great stuff. Had a great sit for his draw and ran on solidly for a decent third without ever really threatening in very fast time. It was a good solid run, but still not up to his amazing win at Bendigo.
The Boss Man is one of the most enigmatic trotters around. Like Bitobliss it can look legendary early on in his preps against average opposition but tends to crumple and never show that form against the big guns. I have been sucked into backing him in the latter situations often. Maybe he has leg issues as well.

STABLE CHANGE FOR SALUTE THE WIND! MATTY CRAVEN!!! Is off 70m at Mt Gambier on Sunday!!?!!
Considering he last ran a place in 2015 you could argue it's well overdue, but will still be interesting to see how this pans out.
