UNDERWORLD figure and businessman Mick Gatto has been probed over suspected links to an offshore sports gambling business, despite being banned from Victoria's casino and racetracks.
The Herald Sun has learned the one-time bouncer and lookout at illegal two-up games around Carlton allegedly had a stake in small betting agency Vilabet - an online gambling site set up in Vanuatu.
The company has since changed its name to BetJack. The revelation comes as betting agencies yesterday suspended betting on Essendon games and the club's Brownlow favourites amid calls from our leaders to ban AFL betting.
Vanuatu is a destination for gambling companies because they are not restricted by tight licensing controls.
Gatto has denied any link to Vilabet or BetJack, although admitting he knew its owner.
"BetJack, yeah I know a bloke who owns it but (it's) got nothing to do with me," he said.

I've been wasting my time monitoring one of Gatto's clients. Chris Murphy - back when he reputedly lost over $100 million in the Opes Primes incident.
Mick of course is the consequence of Bob Hawke's involvement in Zeljko's VITAB fraud.
Ironically from what I've gathered, the non-legal outfits seem to provide more punter protection than the legal ACT GC and (groan) TGC!

Joined with them the other day. Risky, but at least they will let you on for a bit. Whether I get my money back or not is another question, but gambling is a risk right? Hmmmm...
In small, test the waters, build from there.
Did the same with another Vanuatu mob, and although I can't bet with them any more, certainly had no issues in regards to getting money out of them and into my bank.

The PIC investigation will investigate whether some of Mr Fletcher's gambling patterns were mirrored in betting accounts held under the names of police officers.
Mr Fletcher has denied being leaked inside information or having any improper dealings in relation to the Melbourne jockey.
It can be revealed that a business partner of the Melbourne jockey last year stated in text messages he had leaked inside information to punters in Sydney about the jockey's riding activities, an activity banned under the rules of racing and which may breach criminal laws.
The jockey's business partner is minor racing identity and convicted criminal Ben Joyner, who stated in text messages he sent an associate this year that he had leaked inside information from jockeys to Mr Fletcher. One text message from Mr Joyner stated that he had leaked information to ''several guys'' in Sydney ''turning over hundreds of thousands of dollars''.
Mr Joyner also boasted via text messages that he had been given inside information about the outcome of the All Aged Stakes - the race which led to a NSW stewards inquiry involving the Waterhouse racing family earlier this year - with Mr Joyner texting a Melbourne punter before the race that he had been told More Joyous could not win the race. Mr Fletcher and Mr Joyner have both confirmed they had business dealings last year when Mr Joyner ran a Vanuatu betting agency, Betjack but both have denied any wrongdoing.

Criminal connections aren't a shock by the sound of the guy they have ringing me up for business.
They're not registered for GST which doesn't inspire confidence. Essentially they can close shop whenever they feel like it, but at least they're not UK owned and banning anyone who has consecutive winning bets.
