Never been able to understand the potting of callers who get it wrong in a close finish.
Some even pot them for fence-sitting when they "leave it to the judge".
Bit like umpiring decisions these days, gee it's easy to call them correctly from the couch...no pressure there
What's to be gained from havin a stab at a head-bobber if you cop abuse for getting it wrong?
We are no longer listin to the wireless, the crystal-set or standing in the T.A.B without vision, relying on the caller
to "paint a picture" are we?
PC, if you have nothing else to complain about, why not spend some time researching your family tree? I'm strongly

i can understand anyone getting it wrong at flemington.. because he was probably right but last twelve months has seen greg getting it wrong during the call way too often. He's got too much on his plate imo and should be concentrating on calling alone. He's an excellent judge imo, gives out plenty of insightful comment on radio sports university .. but it's a long day by the time the last comes around on sat. arvo.

Unlike days gone by B.Collins would call em and with 400 to go would switch his eyes from the binoc's to the side window where he had taped all his bets. Strike rates by race callers at calling the correct winner in a tight finish are still(and will always be) higher than the strike rate of any punter trying to find a winner.

Well Greg's strike rate isnt too good atm, he has got 3 photos wrong in the last few weeks and his calling over the cup carnival at flemington was way down on past years. If any other caller got 3 wrong they would have got the arse by now

Miles Got it wrong....Big deal, the ones complaining are the ones who lost backing the 2nd horse. I say have a go and put your neck on the line on a call in a tight finish, thats your job. Punters who dont like losing money on a miss judged call give it up, most are whinging Pommmys anyway.

Maybe Melbourne's race caller should be like Mark Shean in Sydney's R7 Shoot Out gets up to beat Monton, Silence is golden, does not even have a go. Obviously to viewers on TVN Shoot Out gets up last stride. Theatre starts Richard Callender takes over and selects the winner before numbers are up to the Public. PLEASE.

Just to rub a bit of salt into the Sydney wound. Richard Callenders selections for the day. R1. Tunes. Unplaced dividend/7. R2. Va Pensiero. 2/9. R3. Streama. 2/7. R4. Under The Sun. Unplaced/9. R5. Famous Seamus. Unplaced/10. R6. Danleigh. 3rd/12. R7. Impetuous. Unplaced/11. R8. Uate. 3/11. What I am trying to say is "These 2 Sydney experts Mark Shean and Richie Callender are the greatest double act in the history of horse racing salesmanship." No profit but plenty of hot air.

Monday Mike pretty sure Shean said the thought Shoot Out won, when he says i think he got up i think that he is going for one, no? I was on course and he went for Shoot Out in the call and said ' from my angle Shoot Out has won"

Mike has his own "reality", Starry. No point discussing things with him in terms of "facts".
Didn't you once have a connection to TVN? Worked there?
Or am I mistaken?

No i think you are mistaken There is No Spoon I much prefer them to Sky and have defended them a few times i would say because as a punter they have provided me with more info than the other mob but have never worked in racing, just a punter.

I think I remember you defending them. My dis-satisfaction relates to only ONE part of their coverage. Apart from
that I agree with you, TVN
Cheers
PS. I don't even watch Sky

Racecallers should not think in a photo finishs S2, its like a safe eachway bet, its the same as I dont know. Dont think do. Letting cameramen do the job for them after the race is not a good look either.

Monday Mike are you smoking something? 2nd march you say callers should stick their neck out and now you are saying they should not think something one. ???????????? If a caller says he think something has won surely thats his preference, Shean didnt say he thought Monton won, he said he thought Shoot Out won. A bobbing head is faster than the eye i would think so they are always going to make mistakes but Miles has stuffed 5 photos in 5 weeks and Shean has probably got 3 wrong in 5 years, having said that we are sitting at home with a white line painted across the track, we probably have a better view than they do, maybe turn the sound down sport and pick the photos yourself.

Fair point. You must realize one important factor factor S2. Per race on Melb Metro meetings on average attract 25% more runners per race making the task more difficult for Miles. Sheans job in Sydney is like a walk in the park Hyde Park. Most races in Sydney have 6 to 9 runners. Yesterdays Carnival meeting only attracted on average 8 starters per race. Easy job for the race caller. Another 5 years and I guess to say they will be down to 5 to 6 runners per race considering there present pattern. Sydney race callers for years have had it easy.

Mike , Shean also calls all trials in Sydney, sometimes 50 heats a week, there are about 70 sets of trials plus metro calling of about 120 and is on Racing Review, i don't know 20 times a year?? Do you follow racing in Sydney? If Greg Miles , or in fact any other caller for that matter, turns up for work 210 times a year i will turn poof and despite working less, Miles still **** it up!

Getting a close one right doesn't make a good caller. Terry Bailey would get more wrong than any other caller, but still very good to listen to. Mark Shean probably the best going atm, no caller picks the tempo better than him and most races he says whether he thinks they're walking or rolling along, and that is far more important than getting a photo right or wrong

Yous are still missing the point very small fields in Sydney makes the job a breeze, there is much less to look for in running. Shean does not call races with 20 plus starters down the straight at Flemington.

flem. and sandown are both horrible angles for race callers. At flemington they are not only positioned two hundred miles before the post but also have to call from a hot air balloon stationed somewhere in the stratosphere. Not easy there and you understand just how good a caller bill collins was when you see where their booths are. when ur a bit down on form like grag is ... the **** ups are inevitable.

Joel, Joel, Joel, Joel. You are so prediactable. Go crawl under a rock & stop stalking me.
I'm making a point, do you refute that Greg Miles ends up with egg on his face more than any other major states race caller? Because that's what i'm saying. If he doesn't know he should stop embarrassing himself.

spoon, think is his job to watch them all and if he doesnt know say so, they why he is called a racecaller, you on the other hand arent, get the picture. I cant remember another metro caller get so many photos wrong in the space of 6-8 months and retain his job and i certainly cant recall a caller going for the third horse. if he doesnt know he should ****g say so and shut the **** up

Watch the race they are coming from everywere field of say 16 horses over 1200m looking head on as a punter we watch the horse we back, greg watching every horse, yes he is paid to do that. but christ some of you blokes are a bit harsh,he calls how many horses in a meeting? calls 7 races fine and nothing said but gets photo wrong and you lot stick the knife in.A actor can redo the line again. racecallers dont have that luxury.

I get the feeling Miles is going with the horses that have the greater momentum as they cross the line and that is costing him.

Spoon did you get the picture in the last at sandown on wednesday, that was another gem of a call, he only calls 15 races a week and f**ks a good percentage of them. You hear the last at Sandown, tell me what you thought of that call, make another excuse for him.
