YDNEY, Dec 20 AAP - Stewards have grilled jockey Tommy Berry over his handling of beaten favourite Driefontein at Wyong on Thursday.
The race was won by She's a Stalker who gave Angela Davies the biggest win of her training career when she upset the short-priced fancy to win the Magic Millions Wyong 3YO Stakes (1200m).
While Davies was celebrating, Berry was left to explain his tactics aboard the $1.10 favourite.
Stewards grilled Berry over why he allowed Peter Robl on Cheers Rihanna to whip around him, taking the lead off Driefontein and putting the favourite in a pocket.
Berry said he had every intention to lead, as were his instructions, but was surprised by Robl who he didn't see until it was too late.
"If I had it over again I would have been a bit more positive," Berry said.
"I didn't think we were going as steady as we were early until I watched the replay."
Senior steward Marc Van Gestel continued to press Berry as to whether he should have tried harder to "dig up" to hold out a "200-1 shot".
"He came very quickly," Berry said.
The inquiry was adjourned so stewards could consider the matter, including looking at betting on the race.
Driefontein was also involved in some pre-race drama when she reared up and got her front leg over the barrier stall but was passed fit to start.
A post-race inspection showed she had taken skin off her front legs and also had an abrasion on her head.
Club veterinarian Dr Goldman said she didn't believe Driefontein had hit her head in the stalls, a claim supported by Berry, so she didn't examine the filly's head prior to the start.
Had it been established Driefontein had struck her head, it is likely she would have been scratched.
As Berry was fronting stewards, Davies was looking to the $1 million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 12 with She's a Stalker.
The filly won by a length over Driefontein with another three lengths to Fuming.
