Up to 10 jockeys face bans because they placed bets through third parties, News Limited newspapers say.
It is believed betting by jockeys, brought to the surface with leading rider Damien Oliver admitting to betting $10,000 on a horse running in the same race in which he was riding, is widespread.
News Limited says one punter is believed to have co-operated with authorities only after being threatened with a lengthy ban from race tracks.
"Well-placed sources say he maintains a ledger that records bets of a number of top-flight jockeys," reports said on Thursday.
"Industry sources say as many as 10 high-profile jockeys could face sanctions as a result of inquiries under way, further damaging a sport still reeling over the Oliver affair."

... the net is wider now and a few more fish will swim into it yet maybe
... investigation into Samba's death had uncovered race-fixing allegations centred on a race involving a horse called Smoking Aces that was ridden by Nikolic at Cranbourne last year.
These allegations led to a probe that helped expose champion jockey Damien Oliver as having placed a $10,000 bet on a rival horse in a race he rode at Moonee Valley in 2010.

"It beggars belief that a professional organisation such as Racing Victoria took almost a month to investigate Oliver's illegal bet and only laid charges on the Monday after the Spring Carnival ended"
They are a fking joke of an organisation. When The Age broke the news, they were infuriated...... THAT IT WAS REPORTED FFS!!!! How about having some fking integrity and doing something about the corrupt little garden gnomes so it doesn't happen in the first place.

CAULFIELD trainer Robert Smerdon has been charged by Racing Victoria stewards for handing over $10,000 to banned jockey Damien Oliver after the champion rider placed an illegal winning bet.
The Victorian Racing Appeal and Disciplinary Board will hear the charge at a date to be fixed.
Smerdon has denied having any knowledge of why Oliver was to receive the money, saying he was the middle man asked by commission agent Mark Hunter to give the money to Oliver.
The Oliver betting scandal rocked the spring carnival after the top jockey pleaded guilty to having a bet on a rival horse in a race at Moonee Valley in October, 2010.
He was disqualified from riding for 10 months after he admitted to placing a $10,000 bet.
Stewards charged Smerdon under Australian Rule of Racing AR 175.
The rule reads that "Any person bound by these rules who either within a racecourse or elsewhere in the opinion of the committee of any club or the stewards has been guilty of conduct prejudicial to the image, or interests, or welfare of racing may be penalised".
"I was asked to pass something on to Damien Oliver by a mate, Mark Hunter, and I did. That's what I told them," Smerdon told News Limited earlier this month.
One of the particulars of the charge states, "You did not, at any relevant time, ask Mr Hunter or Mr Oliver, or take any step to determine, the reason or purpose for the payment from Mr Hunter to Mr Oliver."

What I found strange is that all the reporting on this topic I have not seen any description of what Oliver did was cheating or more relevant he was decribed as a cheat. When he resumes I'm confident he will not be descibed as a confessed cheat. I suppose the assumption is that although he backed the winner he still gave his mount every possible chance

I heard a story, that Damien borrowed Nikolic's phone to get Hunter to place the bet.
The police had a tap on the phone, and passed the information on to Sal Perna.
If he had used any other phone, none of this would have seen the light of day.

PROFESSIONAL punter Mark Hunter has been given indemnity pending production of more information as a new chapter emerged to the Damien Oliver betting scandal. On the day that prominent trainer Robert Smerdon was charged with acting in a manner prejudicial to the image, interests and welfare of racing for his part in the Oliver investigation, Rob Montgomery, the Racing Victoria steward who headed up the investigation, explained why Hunter had not been charged. Hunter, a one-time form analyst for jockeys and racehorse owner, placed a $10,000 credit bet on Oliver's behalf when the champion jockey rang him from the jockey's room at Moonee Valley on October 1, 2010. Hunter subsequently gave the winning bet money - more than $11,000 - to Smerdon, who met Oliver at his home and gave him the money. Montgomery said Hunter, who placed the bet with Queensland-based punter Laurie Bricknell, had co-operated with stewards. Asked why Smerdon had been charged and not Hunter, Montgomery replied: "With Mark Hunter he did help us with our investigations. "Initially, we took the view that he was a witness not a suspect if you like. He did help us corroborate the evidence with Damien Oliver and some concessions were given to Mr Hunter." Asked if Hunter had been given indemnity from having to answer a charge or charges, Montgomery replied: "I suppose you could say that. "But if anything else comes to light - and that's why we are requesting more information - then that's out the window." When issuing the charge today against Smerdon, RV stewards said inquiries were still active. Montgomery said the inquiries into Bricknell had been left open until more information was received from Hunter. He added that he hoped Hunter would furnish the information in the immediate future. Montgomery said the information requested from Hunter had recently come to light. "It's all in relation to Miss Octo****. We want some more information basically to tidy up our reports and just get it right," Montgomery said. "We just need that."

Maybe I have missed something but I haven't seen the important question asked. Given that you argue that this was a one off incident, why did you suddenly have the inclination to place a $10,000 bet on this particular horse in this particular race, especially as you were riding against the horse you bet on?

RACING Victoria stewards have amended the charge issued against Robert Smerdon, who faces the Racing Appeals & Disciplinary Board on Thursday.
Smerdon faces a charge of allegedly acting in a manner prejudicial to the image, interest and welfare of racing when he acted as a courier in the Damien Oliver betting scandal.
The Caulfield-based trainer was asked by professional punter Mark Hunter to deliver to Oliver about $11,000 - the proceeds of a winning bet on Miss Octo**** that Oliver asked Hunter to place for him.
In the initial particulars of the charge, stewards allege that Smerdon did not “at any relevant time ask Hunter or Oliver or take any step to determine the reason or purpose for the payment from Hunter to Oliver.”
RV steward Rob Montgomery, who chaired the investigation into the Oliver bet scandal, told Racing Network the charge had been amended to include greater detail.
Included in the amended charge is that Smerdon had knowledge that Hunter was a professional punter as well as the knowledge that Hunter placed substantial bets on behalf of other people.
Also, another addition to the particulars is that Smerdon’s alleged actions “undermined the integrity of thoroughbred racing in Victoria by facilitating illegitimate betting”
Montgomery said another additional particular of the charge related to Smerdon’s alleged conduct which had the potential to “undermine public confidence in the integrity of thoroughbred racing in Victoria.”
David Grace will appear for Smerdon at the hearing of the RAD Board, which will be chaired by Judge Brian Forrest.
