That Gai picked the barrier she did for more joyous..

"Gai didn't need to pick that barrier,no one in the world thinks that's a good barrier"

IMO,her ego is over the top...tommy( the flog) has too much say..

sorry bout that whoopi ... i forgot my Wink again

the story was about more joyous firming last night .. after easing

and she's clearly the class horse ... gai was probably just bringing her back to a level pegging with the others

(   ...  Wink  didn't forget this time)
Report Kye October 24, 2012 8:55 AM BST
Gai's logic is flawed. If the pace is on then from inside draw it should be easy to avoid trouble, sit behind speed and get off at right time. All an outside barrier has done is put in a risk that he might be caught 3 wide at winning post
Report Live_in_Hope October 24, 2012 9:11 AM BST
she might be due for a buck jump from the barriers
Report VeryLTU October 24, 2012 12:23 PM BST
hmmmm... looks like pierro's test run in the guineas has decided the pace for the plate... i reckon its a sacrifice about to happen here. Personally i think the test was appropriate but they've come up with the wrong conclusion if they think pierro will keep going so you think style.
Report Thebas October 24, 2012 1:54 PM BST
imo more joyous is 12/1 not because she is a 12/1 chance on 'her class & ability vs the class & ability of the remainder of the field'

imo she is 12/1 cause the market says she is a 12/1 chance to ... 'run the distance' ... at that peak ability of hers

so is the market right or wrong ?    and is a $13 to $11 adjustment 3 days out of any indiction or importance

that price is ridiculous if she gets the distance on saturday

when she ran in the 2010 cox behind So You Think ... she led

and in the last 7 of her 8 starts she has been in the ... first three on settling

now gai has chosen barrier 11 for her this time

so they aren't going to have her in the first 3 again on cox day ?    who can know

and if gai had one runner in the race would she have made the same barrier decision for more joyous ?

was the barrier chosen for the horse or the team ... who can know ?

i have deliberately for my own reasons avoided sydney races for the past 3 years where her stable has a runner or multiple runners engaged

now she has three runners in the primo vic wfa championship and it is a race where i now will probably just watch or have a flum back on a 25/1 shot ew

the whole thing feels to me as it often does re sydney racing

so which of her 3 are going to do what in the run

... do the owners know ? ... one owner has already stated publically that she went against his direct barrier request

but hey ... that's gai ... she will come up smelling of roses ... or smelling of something else ... who can know

crikey it must be difficult for a bookie ... trying to set the right market for the race ...  Wink

but good fortunes to all on saturday in the race we wait all season for ... may your charge run straight & strong up that final furlong

agreed bas and it seems obvious that the guineas run was a trial to form their thinking for cox plate tactics... decided they can't win with mj forced into early pace and they also think pierro can vo rogue it.... which it can't imo.
Report davez October 25, 2012 2:32 AM BST
Hope pierro tries to vo rogue it as he will set the race up nicely - reckon this group of 3 yolds are a tad over rated as potential stayers & will get found out come Saturday, not that I have much of a clue as to who wins as she's wide open this year imho.

Always liked Happy Trails, probably above his pay grade here but reckon is a e/w chance with a bit of luck.

i get my gf to apply handcuffs to arms behind back any race day death valley.... but i'd be taking the roughy punt on ethiopia if i was able to. i hate the joint ... believe the rail will be out 3 or 4 metres plate day and you will need a chaffburner that sits just off the pace that proirsir and pierro set up.
Report Lets Elope October 25, 2012 5:18 AM BST
Why wouldn't Proisir lead and pierro just sit on him, think its definitely questionable whether Green Moon has the point to point speed to beat this quality of field around 2000m at the Valley at flemington maybe it would be a different story but doubt he has the speed to win a 2000m Cox Plate against a high quality field and what's wrong with Ocean Park's form?
Report Thebas October 25, 2012 5:31 AM BST
Why wouldn't Proisir lead and pierro just sit on him

exactly lets ... no reason at all ... and more joyous might sit third just off those two stablemates

... so the syd jock pace cartel have come to melbourne for the cox plate ...

of course prosir who had led and won at its previous two starts ... for some reason went back to absolute last in a small field in the champ stks at 2/7 fav ... only gai and nash can know why

and only nash can know why he set pierro alight at caul instead of not pannicking and letting the horse just get into its normal stride

and only gai can know why she defied singo's barrier request to choose an outside gate for more joyous lol

yep ... sydney racing has come to melb

but should be a great race to 'watch'
Report davez October 25, 2012 5:47 AM BST
Gai has taken a big credibility risk with that barrier choice with only 6 of the last 30 CP winners coming from barrier 10 or worse
Report Lets Elope October 25, 2012 5:48 AM BST
She might prove to be a genius but it does seems a bit bizarre to say the least, I would love to see More Joyous settle right off the speed and be allowed to use that scintillating turn of foot and come with just one run late. As for Proisir and Pierro, they're different horses owned by different connections so you're entitled to give both of them every possible chance, it's up to the rest of them to go up and pressure them if they're going too slow, for fark sake they're not under any obligation to go a solid pace in order to set the race up for everyone else.
Report Thebas October 25, 2012 5:56 AM BST
they're not under any obligation to go a solid pace in order to set the race up for everyone else.

.. again i agree lets

and i'm more convinced than ever now that i will not have a serious bet in this years cox ... with the cartel maybe controlling all the lead and on pace action ... as they are allowed to do

i'll prob just have shoot out ew for a few pennies to watch ... and hope for a blow out

all the best to all in our champion wfa classic
Report GoVoGo October 25, 2012 6:14 AM BST
What about the 50% chance of Glass Harmonium jumping with them and pushing up to lead.  What about Happy Trails - surely they look to hunt up and take a position on the leader's backs from ?  And Shoot Out won't be driftng too far back, not having chosen barrier 4.  Green Moon races forward of midfield...maybe even Linton, from 14, my go forward in anticipation of a slow pace (they got nothing to lose, and he's led before).  A lot of horses inside MJ who might like to race 1-2 pairs off the lead.

Speed mapping the race is difficult, but of the 5 or so different scenarios you might come up with, many have MJ (and even Ocean Park) caught 3 wide unless they drop way back.  But many scenarios also have it as a reasonably nippy pace too, so dropping back mightn't be bad, but what odds Nash panics being 4 wide out of the straight and pushes forward?  I'm not betting around a Gai walk-fest up front anyway.
Report Thebas October 25, 2012 6:27 AM BST
good summation Vo ... speed mapping the race IS difficult

in sydney what the cartel do is ... hunt for the first 200-300m to establish the leading pattern ... then they back off heavily ...

all behind them in sydney clearly know that the pace will back off after settling

... so they all ease heavily behind to avoid any potential 'heel clipping' ... and then they dawdle to the home turn and sprint to the line

(in the cox scenario they ease period would be around the first turn and 100m further into that side straight)

at that point depending on who is doing what ... someone might make a rogue decision and 'hunt hard' to make it very interesting

at the 700m where the old school was ... then it separates the men (& women) from the boys

of the minimum 5 scenarios ... it makes it very difficult to punt effectively (ie minimise the number of realistic chances & maximise the value obtained)

... well for me anyway in this upcoming race ... should be a terrific spectacle tho

jOHN Singleton has been involved in a spectacular race-day blow-up with trainer Gai Waterhouse after the flop of super mare More Joyous.

Singleton made the sensational claim that Waterhouse's bookmaker son, Tom Waterhouse, had told "good friends of mine for 20 years'' on the Friday night that More Joyous couldn't win the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).

More Joyous drifted in betting from $2.50 to $3 and finished seventh, beaten nearly four lengths by All Too Hard.

A ropeable Singleton could only shake his head in the mounting yard and immediately declared he would be sacking Waterhouse as trainer of all his horses.

The More Joyous saga then took a further twist when Waterhouse informed stewards that the wonder mare had pulled up with heat in her neck on Thursday morning, and her blood readings weren't 100 per cent.

An unhappy chief steward Ray Murrihy wanted to know why Waterhouse didn't bother to inform him there had been a hiccup on the eve of a $400,000 Group 1 race.

Waterhouse is presently before the stewards detailing the pre-race condition of More Joyous which is believed to be at the centre of Singleton's ire.

How could you ever give your horses to the wife of leading bookmaker to train. if Singo wants to punt them then he should never have given his horses to her.

Report spyvspy27 April 27, 2013 11:01 AM BST
Mr Blackball, even though what you state about MJ not winning since last Sept is correct, but if you're trying to suggest she has been out of form since then, you're sadly mistaken.
Going into todays race, she has raced 4 times since that win, next run 4th in the G1 Toorak with 60kg, next run in the Cox Plate, a total forget run after Gai picked gate 11 and she never got into any sort of position, spelled after that run, 1st up this prep, she runs Pierro to 3/4l, again hardly a bad run, then 2nd up she was a moral beat in the G1 Queen Of The Turf as 1.60 fav, today was a shocker, and not unexpected by the looks of what has transpired
