Are all horses who don't make the final 40 from the current list deemed to be balloted out or just the 4 reserves from Thursday onwards? I believe if they're balloted out then they're classed as NR and stakes are refunded.

Stakes should be refunded on those balloted out on Thursday and then on the reserves balloted out on Friday.

...but there could still be withdrawals, which are losers for ante-post purposes.

Is it my imagination, or are there a lot more balloted runners in these big races than there were 7-8 years ago?

Pete

In 2008, 74 of the original 149 entries were balloted out.

I think that they must have put the entry fee up after that!

In 2013, just 3 were.

Of course, 2013 was a wonderful year for layers.

Was it after 2013 that Betfair stopped exposure offset for layers? I think it was a year or two later
than that, wasn't it?

I still believe it's inconsistent compared to golf, where a nonner is money back in all cases
and exposure offset is allowed (in my opinion a R4 would be justified for that). I haven't bet
on Wimbledon for a few years, but that used to be non-runner equals loser, I believe (it is not
now - nonner = money back)

Pete

Exposure offset was stopped in the run-up to the 2012 race. They allowed leeway for layers who had existing positions at the time (January 2012 I think). It followed a mini-scandal when people who didn't understand how the markets work were building up large liabilities which they couldn't meet.

Since they made the change, Ante-Post markets on big handicaps have reduced in size.

For example, this year the GN Ante-Post win market will be about £900k once the reserves are out. At it's peak, it was about 2.5 million.

Nice record-keeping Rydal. The years fly in.

I know they initially said it would only be handicaps and the festival bumper, but I
notice that they have extended that (without warning) to some other festival races.
Like a lot of other people, I'm just waiting for a company to exploit the niche that
BF has chosen to vacate.

I agree Pete.

The Antepost markets are small but players do other things as well. The neglect is typical of the general approach. At one stage, the rules had the worng date for the race, horses names misspelt (makes using a programme difficult), a 6 year old among the runners, and so on. They could very easily get the safety benefits of offsetting without making it so draconian (for example allowing offsetting for bets on the top 40 remaining horses). They can't really be bothered so the market gets neglected.

Moan over!

Pete - sorry but can you quickly explain this to me? - I don't usually lay AP markets much (I do remember an incident where I ended up w a massive neg a/c balance - and BF explained it away saying it would come right in time ... is this what you mean) or do you just mean commiss offset ?

Completely agree Rydal.  I am guaranteed a nice green but have had to tie-up £10k.  With THREE NRs this morning though it has all been worth itCool
