Not sure about my first , but my favourite was Maori Venture at 28/1.
Told all my pals that it might not get round , but if it was within five lengths at the last it would scoot in , having a terrific finish for a staying chaser.

Wish I was always so spot on.

Six (old) pence - my pocket money - each way on ESB in the 1956 National.

I had asked my Dad what to back and he had pointed to the initials on the headlines on the national page of the Liverpool Daily Post - "Everybody's Sporting Bet".

It won at 100/7 when Deven Loch slipped up and I went downhill from there.

West Tip 1986 - but ESB is a great shout, now we should ask for anything earlier than 1956?

similar story to Rydal but 16 years later - Well To Do 1972

Placed by my dad on my behalf (he did n't back it himself!) - just after decimalization so 10p (2 shillings in old money) win - think it was 12/1 - also out of my pocket money, inflation was high in the seventies hence the difference between the 1956 stake and the 1972 bet!

Hope this does n't get be on the aftertimers thread Happy

I was nearly 8 years old (we started early in Liverpool!).

I assumed that it would always be as easy and I was bitterly disappointed and amazed the next year when my selection (again ESB) was unplaced - Sundew was the winner.

Innocent times.

My first 'winner' was Durham Edition who of course finished second in 1988.

My mum got me a sweeper from her work, I got a tenner. Cheers mum that was me hooked on the ggs age 10 Laugh

Had him backed the following 2 years as well, finishing 5th and then 2nd again beaten 3/4 length when Mr Frisk smashed the track record.

As a child I'm sure Rag Trade was put on as a bet for me. I told everyone at school to back Mr Snugfit in 85 when Last Suspect caught him.

As an  adult in 1990 I backed and gave my friends four horses in order of me fancying them it was Brown Windsor Rinus Mr Frisk and Durham Edition of course they were the first 4 home.

It has been an up and down race for me over the years. I think I was the only one at Aintree who did not back Papillion instead I had a packet on Mely Moss.

I went through a grand few years with Lord Gyllene, Bindaree, Monty's Pass as standouts but in recent years I've had more 'fallers at the first' (seriously!)
