Has some nice bits of form and I think he looks a likely type for the race. Managed to get a bit on at 66/1 but 50/1 is widely available.
Absolutely hacked up in the Summer Cup over 3m2f at Uttoxeter and looked like he could have gone round again and still has a very nice mark of 146. Thought he ran a pretty good race behind Thistlecrack at Chelts recently staying on very steadily and a couple more spins over hurdles should put him spot on for this.
Been all over him since October. Delighted with Cheltenham run. Is it possible though for him to not get in? Number 55 on the current list. It is inconceivable to me that off a mark of 145 he'll struggle to be in the race but is it even possible?

I backed him at Cheltenham and think he was an unlucky loser. Was settled at back of field and the pace of the race meant that it was an impossible task to win from were he was. Ran amazingly well to finish 8th beaten only 4 1/4 lengths. Handicap mark over hurdles lower than chase mark. Hope he misses the national and runs in the 3 mile handicap hurdle at Aintree. Maximum bet if he does

Especially when you consider the form of the yard hasn't been great too. Most of hers ran poorly last week and The Romford Pele was easily the bets performance of her week.
Cant find any info sewter. Think someone on this form knows the owners though.

"His aim this year will probably be the National. He is on a nice mark and will get in and he run his best races on good ground. He ran on soft ground at Cheltenham last time and hated the ground. He will probably have one more run and go for the National."
Fingers crossed.
I'm hoping it does run. This was the quote on January 6th:"His aim this year will probably be the National. He is on a nice mark and will get in and he run his best races on good ground. He ran on soft ground at Cheltenham last time and hated the gro
Number 47 (could be 46 if winning ballot with other horse on same handicap mark)on list must still be doubt that enough will be withdrawn to get a run. Surely with prize money for National nobody would pass up the chance to run if any sort of chance of winning.

A lot to like about this one, ran on into 7th in the 3m 3f race at Chelt in Nov. That race has a good record of throwing up horses who run well in the national, Saint Are, Monbeg Dude, Alvarado to name a few. Also like the prep run over hurdles in the Coral Cup, Pineau de re did similar in 2014 but ran in the Pertemps (3rd). Meets most others stats so happy to be involved at 50's.

Same owners have O'Faolains Boy so could take him out to secure a run Sultan... 6 more required. Looking at the list, Im still confident he will get in.

There are several above him on the list with entries in the Irish National and would be surprised if a few don't favour that option, especially those who prefer soft ground.

the Summer Cup stroll off 139 and the running on 7th (carrying 11-07) off 148 in the 3.5 miler at Cheltenham are very good runs.
the recent Cheltenham run over hurdles shows that the horse is well
I think this horse has a real good chance, especially given good ground.
Hopefully he will get in

historically at this time of year horses from 52 down are sure of a run..its ok saying the top 40 are at this stage all certain or intended runners but a lot are ground dependent etc and will be taken out . and as we all know horses are v fragile and at least 4/5 will be taken out due to injury..my guess at this stage is that the 52nd horse at least will get in..

Someone has assured me that due to the number left in the bottom horse would be numbered 52,53 or 54 of those still possible today. That agrees with kavvie.

68 on the list is the highest up there not to get in in the last 15 years.
It would be a huge surprise if he doesn't get in, based on recent history.

sorry should have added they also have ofalains boy, who they said ran well at cheltenham but deliberately slowed him down when they knew he would not place. not sure what they may go for at Aintree but RP is the preferred GN horse

I wonder if Trevor Whelan will ride him? I've been talking up Whelan for a couple of years now and with him recently teaming up with Curtis and riding a few winners for her he could be in line for the ride.

I would be amazed if he doesn't get in, I also like Cause of Causes and I would say his chances are about 50:50 or 60:40 against. I'm sure the cut will come at 10st 1 or 10st 2
don't forget that there are 2 more declaration stages, tomorrow and Friday. I'm guessing we will know a lot more tomorrow lunchtime
let's hope this thread is just one big love-in come 5.30 on Saturday!

Why so dismissive of his chances in the big one Sultan? And I think its a bit daft to say its 'annoying' he got into a race of this importance. He's got a great chance and connections must be delighted.

I had serious bet at Cheltenham and thought he was unlucky. Better handicapped over hurdles and thought the 3 mile handicap hurdle at Aintree was well within his compass. Have had bit on for National because obviously well and has outside chance. Much prefer Saint Are for National .Connections obviously want crack at million pound race. Basically think he is a well handicapped hurdler and fairly handicapped chaser and think to win National bit more required.

Why does the ground need to dry out for this horse?
He was beaten 14length by Thistlecrack on heavy back in January. Against any other horse that would sound poor, but would Many Clouds have got any closer under the same weight conditions? I doubt it....well not much closer.
TRP has staying influences which indicate he should see the trip out, so strike will the iron is hot.
I'm assuming the entries for the handicaps on Saturday were back ups in case he still needed a few to come out on Thursday?
Obituaries of winning Grand National owners are published in the national press.....winning the Gaskells Handicap (Grade 3) doesn't carry the same kudos.

Exactly lufc. He will have countless 3m Handicap Hurdles to choose from next season... there is only one Grand National and everything is teed up for him to have his best possible chance this year.
I think he is versatile with regards to the ground... probably does prefer better ground if you had the choice, but its certainly not going to be a bog and anything like soft or a bit better will be fine for him imo.

Turftrax have the meter stick reading as 5.8 yesterday. It was 5.7 last Thursday so marginally better ground now.
However, the going has "changed" from good to soft, soft in places last week to soft, good to soft in places today!!
Bizarrely, if you look at the Aintree Turftrax map the National course appears to be largely good to soft with some good ground and some soft ground.
Make of that what you will

Yes, he needs to jump. And I'm sure he'll take to the Aintree fences alright...I even say he's likely to prefer them (so long as the jockey doesn't push him) as he can get into a better than at Cheltenham.
Cue Card didn't win the Gold Cup....he fell and he's a class horse Don Cossack didn't win the King George...he fell and he's a class horse
All horses need to be able to jump clean.

Sewter, I looked at turftrax earlier, and couldnt make any sense of it! Hardly any yellow at all so hard to see how soft is really appearing in the description! No yellow whatsoever on the Mildmay course and as much good as good to soft. Its very hard to see there being much soft in the description if you look at that combined with the forecast.
I think Good to Soft (soft in places) is the most likely.

hard to believe it got in by 1!!! thank the good lord for that, I can't get over how close it was, this race is changing every year, bottom weight is rated 6lb higher than last year. Even 5 years ago Romford would have been in the top half of the card and carrying over 11st
