I'm not sentimental about the horses - we're all going to die - I just don't want the RSPCA making this race softer than it is.

The RSPCA are a political organisation dont give them money .

They portray puppys in adverts and con a gullible public into making donations and waste the money by the million in political work .

Give them nothing ,same as the bbc dont pay them either .
Report SEATHESTARS....NO1 April 5, 2014 12:57 PM BST
Only problem with the bbc is you don't really have a choice not to pay them as you will end up in court, fined or worse, sent to prison Shocked

The rspca are a charity, we all have a choice whether to donate to them!

nonsense. You don't have to pay license fee. They just send you 55 reminders that you have to pay. That's it.
Report SEATHESTARS....NO1 April 5, 2014 3:47 PM BST
Do they? You sure about that there then? So no chance an license fee agent can't knock on your door unannounced much like a bailiff, take your details, then say to you, "I understand it is difficult, here is a payment card for paypoint start using it today, you will not get prosecuted this time" only for a letter from magistrates court to come through your door 2 months later with a hearing date?

Trust me, man with experience here!

Yes. Good. There were some dodgy jumpers in the race though, weren't there? Do you think trainers are more
prepared to run dubious chasers if the fences are softer (and smaller)?

Good news that all are safe ,bad news the C4 coverage.

Meanwhile the BBC headline on the radio was about the Jockeys dispute with the BHA. They are only interested in negative news.

What will happen when a horse dies in the National.

Because this will happen, guarranteed. It is (a horrible) part of National Hunt racing , hell, horse racing period.

It's ludicrous we sit here on tenterhooks each year, praying a horse doesn't die because we know this is where some media outlets, with their own anti-racing agenda's, will focus on. Then there will be the inevitable knee-jerk reactions calling for even more asinine measures in an attempt to guarrantee something that is unguarranteeable.

Why don't 'we' talk about the care that the horses get. How they are treated like kings (and if they are not, then thankfully scum like Kamil Mahdi, Mohammed Al-Zarooni and Mick Quinn are drummed out of the sport). Why don't we talk about this is what the entire breeding industry is built around - prioducing racehorses to run inhorse races. Why don't we talk about the passion and love we have for horses. Why don't we say that every time we go racing or have a bet we are putting feed in horses mouths and wages in peoples pockets and what have the 'anti's ever contributed on that front?

Take the argument to these people rather than hoping that the inevitable will not happen?

Great post

Well said Rog, but I think you'll find that your average "anti" will ignore all that and hate us anyway.
They got the hunt. They'll always want to ban fishing (angling, as a sport) and they see the National as
a chink in the armour of NH racing. It's not exactly bull-fighting but it's still sport involving animals.

If I had to bet on it, I wouldn't give the Grand National another 100 years.
Report rogerthebutler April 7, 2014 9:51 PM BST
That's not the point though.

You can't educate pork (sorry, falafel and mung beans) so there's no point trying to convince the anti's.

It's mister and missus average Briton, who only tune in once a year to the National, but who kind of dislike seeing the horsies getting hurt, that we have to address.

I think we should have a petition to have the London Marathon banned, or at least shortened to a half marathon. There's been more fatalities in the London Marathon in the past 3 years than the GN
