Evan Williams is keen to give Cappa Bleu another try at the John Smith's Grand National after the gelding finished fourth in this year's renewal. The Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on November 3 is one of the races the Llancarfan trainer might consider for the 10-year-old ahead of the Aintree spectacular in April, although he has not ruled out running him over hurdles as well. "It will be difficult with him because he ran such a good race in the Grand National last year," Williams told At The Races. "Talking to Mr and Mrs Rucker (owners) we are pretty keen to get there again. "With State Of Play I used to go straight there. With Cappa Bleu it will take three or four runs to get him going so he's going to have to go to a few other places. "We will definitely look at novice hurdle routes, but if we had the rain I'd look at the Charlie Hall because he wouldn't get his penalty there and it might be a race he could go well in. "The Welsh National would also come on the agenda because he ran a good race to come third in that last year. "It might be novice hurdles or a couple of those other races before the Grand National in the spring. "I'd very much like to have another go at the National with him." |

Would be a very interesting runner if turning up there on the day

I don't like horses who have completed the National previously. Amberleigh House won after a previous completion, but generally it is debutants that win (horses that have fallen before in the race are also ok, especially if they got deep into it and were still in contention).
State Of Play and Big Fella Thanks being a couple of recent examples of horses that have run good races in it and looked like they might build on that the next time, but they can't. If you aren't good enough to win at the first attempt, you are unlikely to be good enough to win at the second even if the first run was promising. |

Mon Mome did not show much in his first attempt round Aintree
but won next time 100/1, so was like AHouse out of this theorie. However, Bindaree + Hedgehunter+ Red Marauder are confirming it. Concerning the ability of SOP i think riding tactics of owner + trainer are going more for a secured place money than on winning by taking too much risk ( usually held up + staying on very strongly) Similar tactics applied to Cappa Bleu this year. |

Backed him last year.Got to be on the short list but I'm not a great fan of horses that have tried and failed in this race before.
|
By:
Hedgehunter ran in the National falling at the last in 2004 and winning in 2005
Red Marauder fell in 2000 and won in 2001 |
By:
I should have added "completed the course"..... however Red Marauder is hardly relevant as only two finished without mishap.Amberleigh House had also run in the race before but the majority of winners are taking part for the first time.

LOL a million and one things can go wrong in the National yet you only get one chance to win it according to this nugget Big Fella Thanks wouldnt stay if he ran in 100 Nationals, so that aint a great example of a bad point cracking warm-up from the Buzzer at Ascot last week....bang on course apparently...stay on CB |

well weighted with those that finished in front of him last year and was badly hampered

Rare Bob ran a cracking trial today in the Leinster National btn only 2 lengths giving over a stone to the winner and over 2 stone to the 2nd. Came out best in the GN weights in his previous run in the Bobbyjo Chase also. Looks like he's running into form and only got 10-02 in the big one, so looks weighted to go close IMO. Has run well at Aintree on good ground also unseating 2 out when leading in race won buy Prince de Beauchene giving a stone. In the GN this time RARE BOB receives a stone from PDB. Must have a sniff with normal luck in running.
