I certainly wouldn't be running my Gold Cup winner over 4 1/2 miles around Aintree lugging topweight in four weeks time.

JP might though. It would be a hell of a double and great from a sporting point of view.

Has any Gold Cup winner won the National in the same season?  Anyone know how many horses have won both races (different seasons)?

Golden Miller uniquely won both in the same season. Garrison Savannah got close.

However, the Gold Cup is traditionally a prep race for the National, though it's outgrown that nowadays.

L Escargot was the last to win both in the 70s, not same season though , he actually won the GN 4 years after his second Gold Cup and had his warm up in the 2 mile champion ChaseLaugh
