The Scottish Grand National winner was a general 20-1 chance for the Aintree marathon but will not run again this season due to a small strain to his nearside tendon.

The setback emerged after Middleham Park Racing's chaser had finished fifth in the Hennessy Gold Cup in December and has now scuppered hopes for Aintree.

"He is not going to be entered," trainer Tim Vaughan said on Monday.

"It is a heartbreaking scenario. After his run in the Hennessy we were obviously exceptionally excited as it was the perfect prep run.

"But he had a little problem afterwards, I spoke to Middleham Park Racing and in the best interests of the horse we felt we would leave it now.

"We are going to give him a complete rest until the autumn, bring him back in and probably go straight for a tilt at the National."

Trainer Nicholls rules out Grand National service for Tidal Bay
By Marcus Townend

Tidal Bay, second to Midnight Chase in the Argento Chase at Cheltenham, has been ruled out of another shot at the Grand National but the famous race on April 14 could be an option for Argento fourth Time For Rupert.

Tidal Bay, who unseated at the 10th fence in last year's National when with Howard Johnson, produced a trademark effort on Saturday, being kidded into the race by Ruby Walsh without ever threatening.

However, new trainer Paul Nicholls said: 'I think we have pretty much ruled the National out - he jumps too carefully and is too old to change his ways. He could try to pick up some crumbs in the Gold Cup and then run in a race like the Totesport Bowl at Aintree.'

Time For Rupert stayed on after getting outpaced. His trainer Paul Webber said: 'The owners are debating whether to enter him for the National. It may not be this year but certainly next.'

Meanwhile, Philip Hobbs will aim Captain Chris at the Ascot Chase on February 18 after an abject Argento performance when he pulled up after jumping violently right.

Hobbs said: 'He landed on top of the second fence and we think it was a confidence issue after that.'

Hobbs is still aiming Menorah at the Arkle Chase despite his fall at Doncaster reaffirming jumping concerns.
