A very well respected racing figure once told me that he always liked to imagine how he would react if for some reason he'd missed a big race, and opened the paper the following day to discover the identity of the winner. ie Would the name come as a surprise to him, or would he reason it entirely plausible. You may think it's a strange way of looking at a race, but I've found it quite refreshing. Especially if you remove the names of connections, and just describe the horse's "qualifications" for the race There are three or four horses that could potentially start favourite on Saturday (barring a bizarre Monkerhostin style plunge) - The Midnight Club, What A Friend, Backstage or perhaps Don't Push It. Which of them will turn out to be a Hedgehunter (a winning favourite we all felt we ought to have had in hindsight), and which will turn out to be a Jurancon or an Inis Cara (both of whom you might not recall were sent off favourite or joint favourite in the last 10 runnings) ?
