Seagram and Party Politics for me. Since then I've had Just So, Camelot Knight, Smarty, Liberthine, and State of Play Twice for e/w returns.

Many, many hard luck stories, and also downright sh1t bets, not to mention 3 first fence fallers.

The rce has been very kind to me, but I have a mate who 2 years ago was in the same position so he had a fiver each way on every runner, comply or die won and all the placed horses were around 14s I think, sure he said he lost about £250 on the race !

Earth Summit in 1998 was my first - had been trying since 1979.

Added Monty's Pass, Numbersixvalverde and Comply Or Die to the list in the last few years.

First one I ever backed was Zongalero, led most of the way before finising second - should have taken the hint really Laugh

£2.50 e/w on Mon Mome at 200/1!!

I had Malijmar at a massive price last year when he was tanking along - would have done his usual thing and found nothing after the last though

Good grief I can't believe some of you have such a poor record in the National.  I guess it has become more difficult in the last 20 years or so since the fences were made easier and so many established chasers then don't contest chases to preserve handicap marks.  Clan Royal being a classic example of a career wasted as he hardly ran in a chase other than the GN after the first debacle.

Iv'e been betting on it since 1971 and can remember winning with Well To Do, Red Rum,Grittar, West Tip, Rhyme n Reason, Mr Frisk, Rough Quest, Lord Gyllene, Hedgehunter, Comply Or Die, Dont Push It.  I've also had close calls with Andy Pandy (fell when a fence clear), Grease Paint (twice), What's Up Boys (Johnson messed by going to soon) & Clan Royal (Cooper lost whip and tried to take wrong course).

West Tip was an obvious bet (fell when going well the previous year), as was Mr Frisk (needed firm ground and run a cracker at Cheltenham). Rough Quest had great form.  Hedgehunter everybody shoud have been on that.  Comply Or Die had won the Eider off top weight.

My strategy is to back about three and I concentrate on from from four specfic races (the Irish winners trip me up as I don't know how to access them so I ignore them).  Anyway I normally back one long range if I see it running well at the Cheltenham festival and it got into the GN below 11 stone.  Also I keep my eye on the horses that have run well in the GN the previous year.  In recent years I have backed horses purely to lay back on the day.  If you know your racing it is easy to spot the horses ripe for this.
