guys,

this is a genuine question and not a daft quiz question!

I was asked last night if a horse has ever won the national on its 3rd attempt?

I genuinely didn't know - can anybody help?

cheers boys

Massive drift on BFT - 18s last night 23s this morning, perhaps all is not well ?
Report JamesRB April 3, 2011 10:58 AM BST

Report Hearts.no1 April 3, 2011 8:42 PM BST

Connections are also planning for G Lee to ride Big Fella Thanks exactly the same way as Amberleigh House was. Racing at the back and conserving his energy for a late run. This may do the trick because last year he was up in the van for the whole race and wilted after the last. Naturally with age comes stamina and whoever backs him will get a terrific run for their money. This season the horse has been staying on well in all his races (apart rom the Hennessy), deliberately held up to train his mind to save himself for a finish. It will be interesting to see how it all maps out.

Black Apalachi nearly did last year.
Report toffeeboy April 4, 2011 11:06 AM BST
If the predicted weather comes, hunting round at the back will get you 6th or 7th place, you don't win good ground nationals like that.
Report mutley77 April 4, 2011 11:43 AM BST
See if the owner backs it. If he does then it will probaly win.

Strange that big H sold this horse 3 weeks before the National, would suggest it's not got a chance?
Report bristoldoug April 4, 2011 9:43 PM BST
Has looked the winner 2 out in the last couple of nationals only to fold up after the last. I have backed him 'just in case' but believe that just like State of Play he will again run a sound race but get done on the run in.
If you fancy either of these too then surely the horse to be on is Comply or Die. He at least truly stays the trip which as a past winner and runner up can testify to the fact. Ran a cracker last year until between 3 and 2 out after which he was allowed to coast home in his own time. With a stone less on his back this year he rates a solid eachway bet at around 50/1 in a wide open race.
Report gazovic April 4, 2011 9:45 PM BST
I'll have some of that 50s
Report gazovic April 4, 2011 9:47 PM BST
ah. habit of just reading the start and the end.
Report saxon farm April 4, 2011 10:14 PM BST
BFT has not seen the trip out on last 2 attempts.
I predict the same scenario this year.
Report Ramruma April 4, 2011 10:45 PM BST
Is it lack of stamina though, or is he pulling himself up in front because he hates to see daylight?
Report barkinggreville April 4, 2011 10:48 PM BST
think if it stays dry up here until the race and the coc doesn't get too giddy with the watering can then he could just get home this year and make me a tad happy
Report saxon farm April 4, 2011 10:58 PM BST
A bit of both, I think Ramruma.
Report Angel Gabrial April 4, 2011 11:46 PM BST
Age improves stamina. He will be held up this year.
Report Tatie Baron April 5, 2011 1:06 PM BST
Not sure it's a stamina thing with him, just think he's a bit soft. Chucked it in at Carlisle this season and tried to do the same when he won at Newbury last year. Likely to be thereabouts all the same.
