Here's a snapshot of some trends for the big one:

•There has been no winner of the Grand National carrying more than 11st5lbs since 1977, out of 94 runners. (Don't Push It carried 11-5 and was one of only two horses to carry more than 11st to victory since 1983, the other being Hedgehunter (11-1))
•Every winner since 1970 had a win over three miles to their name.
•There has not been a winner of the Grand National under the age of eight for 70 years.
•Seven of the last eleven winners have jumped over the Grand National fences previously.
•Irish trained runners have won six of the last twelve Grand Nationals.
•Eighteen of the last twenty-one winners were ridden prominently from the outset of the second circuit.
•Fifteen of the last twenty winners started in the first eight in the betting.
•The previous year's Irish Grand National has been a key race in the form.
•Check for previous Grand National form.
•There has only been one Cheltenham Festival winner to have followed up in the Grand National since 1961.
•There has only been one French-bred winner of the Grand National in the last 101 years.

Not many trends horses ran last year, and the ones that ran i dont think they were well in or primed for the race.
the winner was thats for sure.two many trends can blind.
its not the weight that puts me off backing wat afriend, its i dont think hes been aimed at winning the national

Out of the window the weight carried stat - the first and second both carried well over Hedgehunters 11st 1lb. Out of the window too with the stat about GN winners having run in certain races - the Cheltenham 3m5f race at the Nov meeting hadnt figured before.

Reasons ? The compression of the weights to allow more horses to run without being out of the handicap has given an advantage to the heavyweights and with the ever growing importance of Cheltenham it was only a matter of time before that G3 contest threw up a GN winner.

Stats are dead - long live the stats !!!

I think it was 2 years ago. Mon Mome was ranked about 4th on the list he compiled!

I remember that. I picked out Mon Mome purely on that recommendation. Top class.
