TRAINER Jason Ward faces investigation by the BHA after making comments on AtTheRaces deemed to be racially offensive.

After Monte Cinq made all in the opening 5f maiden at Wolverhampton, Ward was interviewed on the channel and used a racial stereotype while discussing the horse.

After the initial consternation on social media had died down, the BHA's media manager Robin Mounsey said: "We are aware of the incident and will be taking the appropriate steps in relation to this matter.

"There is no place in British racing for racially offensive language and we are taking this matter very seriously."

Monte Cinq was Middleham trainer Ward's first winner since September. The 10-1 chance was getting off the mark at the eighth attempt, having been second at Newcastle a fortnight ago.

I just can't believe anyone would say anything like this these days in front of a reporter, whether you think it's ok as banter is irrelevant, this sort of thing is always going to be blown up massively.
Report ReaseHeath November 1, 2016 9:43 PM GMT
I agree BB - but they don't need any investigation or probe, just a decision to determine whether the remarks are racially offensive or not, then a tariff which automatically applies a fixed penalty for the offence.

The way it's reported by the Racing Post does n't even make it clear which rules he might have broken and what offence he might be charged with.

The BHA opt for a knee jerk reaction to pander to an outcry on social media instead of taking a little time to establish a considered, holistic response.

I'm not defending Ward either - I think the remarks were unfunny, unoriginal, unnecessary and embarrassing. I accept many on here do not find them offensive but there will inevitably be those that do - Linford Christie took umbrage about references to his 'lunchbox' 25 years ago and the world has moved on since then.

It's very simple really - it doesn't matter that it is a racing channel. Daytime tv is available to be watched by people of all ages and therefore everything on it has to be acceptable to everyone and not likely to offend - irrespective of colour etc. It is different for subbed channels i think. Look at all the warnings/reaction they give on those tosh morning shows when they discuss anything like this.
If you are happy for people to talk about men's knackers in relation to horses anatomy in front of your 3yo grandchild (and introduce a race element into it for good measure) then fair do's. I suggest you do it loudly in a room full of children and see the reaction on their and their parent's faces. Good luck with that.

I agree with you all in that the world has gone mad but I will counter it by saying if you look at the definition of racism it says that as soon as you suggest a member of another race has something different about them then that is deemed as racism. For me I always thought that racism had to be derogatory but it seems that by insinuating a different race has a characteristic exclusive to that race then that is enough.

Ward fined £1,200 for 'offensive' comment
By jon lees 4:16PM 17 NOV 2016

MIDDLEHAM trainer Jason Ward escaped with a fine on Thursday for his use of a racial stereotype in a TV interview he gave after saddling a winner at Wolverhampton earlier this month.

Ward was fined £1,200 by a BHA disciplinary panel who found he had brought the sport into disrepute by referencing an "offensive and inappropriate racial connotation" in a comment which was broadcast on At The Races after Monte Cinq's success in a maiden.

The BHA asserted that Ward's outburst led to adverse publicity, including in its reporting on social media, by the BBC and the Racing Post.

It was considered serious enough by the trainer that he immediately apologised to ATR, the Racing Post and his website.

Ward's barrister Roderick Moore said the trainer had been "momentarily unguarded and showed a serious lack of judgement". He accepted that his remarks were "lewd and unprofessional" and there was no intention to cause offence.

A statement on Ward's behalf said: "Jason is pleased that the fine is well below the entry point of £2,000, and also below the level of fines handed down in other recent high-profile cases of a breach of this rule.

"While the Panel will doubtless choose their words carefully, we infer that the reality is that they accepted Jason's case that this unfortunate utterance was the consequence of a momentary lapse of judgement, that he quickly apologised to all and sundry afterwards, that it was not racist in either a legal or any meaningful sense and that it was unlikely to have caused offence to anyone with a sense of humour. "
Report Howellsy November 17, 2016 7:26 PM GMT
A lot of pathetic, uncultivated idiots on here. Frightening. Ward's comment was a completely gratuitous racial stereotype. Today is the first I've heard of it, and I came on here after reading the RP report as I thought this was the best place to find out what was said. I was shocked and disgusted when I saw it. I totally sympathise with those sad individuals amongst you who want to make jokes or laugh at jokes like that in your own homes, but I don't want to listen to that sort of inexcusable ignorance on my tv and I am relieved that is was deemed worthy of punishment. This is not PC gone crazy, it's a rational, fair minded intolerance of crass, moronic insensitivity. I am amazed some of you have managed to acquire the skills to use a computer. Well done. Benny Hill!!?? Whatever.

Report GEORGE.B November 17, 2016 7:43 PM GMT
I haven't mentioned anything, but I wasn't offended by what he said, though it's not something I would ever say myself.

If you're offended by it, that's fair enough, but don't think you can tell me what I should be thinking or saying.

Report GEORGE.B November 17, 2016 8:09 PM GMT
So apparently Ward has been given a fine well below the entry level by the BHA, and seemingly hasn't broken any laws, so it would be hard to describe his 'punishment' as anything other than a token one by an authority who wants to be seen to be doing the 'right thing', and that's fair enough.

So just because I don't share the same view of what was said by Ward as Howellsy does, let's take a look at what he has said about me and others:

"A lot of pathetic, uncultivated idiots on here...I am amazed some of you have managed to acquire the skills to use a computer"

Ah, England in the 70s. Bless This House, Benny Hill, bananas being thrown from the terraces - his remark is exactly the same comparison as this....

Can you name any high profile job within sport where the price for such a comment would have been less than an instant sacking? Plenty of footballers for starters. Proven for what would be classed as proper racial slurring etc.

You seem to be the type of person who goes on youtube to find a video of Bernard Manning just to watch it so you can be "disgusted" by it and make comments and slate anyone who dares to have a laugh at any of it.

What will you do if the hattrick pops up with Le Pen getting in?
Report Howellsy November 17, 2016 9:56 PM GMT
In my opinion, there's not really that much of a gap between the private parts comment and making monkey noises from the terraces which black footballers had to endure just a few decades ago, and which lots of people presumably deemed amusing. It's a sliding scale. You might as well defend the monkey chants on the basis that a lot of people like monkeys so what exactly is the problem? Instead of me having to explain why it is offensive, why can't someone explain to me what is amusing about stereotyping black men by penis size and why is it acceptable to perpetuate this stereotype?

"If I was a black man" ... how generous of you to make such a small imaginative leap
"footballers for starters" ... yep, gotta give you that one. Strengthens my argument doesn't it?
"Le Pen" - what made you think of Le Pen by reading this thread then?
Report Magic__Daps November 17, 2016 10:25 PM GMT
In my opinion, there's not really that much of a gap between the private parts comment and making monkey noises from the terraces which black footballers had to endure just a few decades ago - If that is what you (or anyone) actually think I am astounded. In my opinion if you asked a black man if making monkey noises at him was on the same level as saying he was stereotyped as having a massive penis, I would be pretty sure he would be looking at you startled. How you even think that is comparable is ridiculous (imo).

I would honestly be amazed if any black men were offended by his comments at all.

"footballers for starters" ... yep, gotta give you that one. Strengthens my argument doesn't it? - No it is the complete opposite of your argument, you asked someone to name any high profile job in sport where someone wouldn't have got an instant sacking, Luis Suarez never along with many high profile footballers/sportsmen.

"Le Pen" - what made you think of Le Pen by reading this thread then? - you did, because you sound like a typical left wing do gooder, and seem to think everyone has to be offended by any comment that is deemed controversial. I still do not see what point of his comment was offensive.

It was a very stupid thing to say but are they all going to have to pass a pc test when applying for a trainers license? The habit of interviewing every owner, trainer and jockey before and after each race is bound to lead to this sort of thing occasionally.
Many years ago I was on a training day for spokespersons for the NFU and it was made very clear to me that if asked for an interview on behalf of the Union, I had to toe the party line and on no account say what I really thought. Perhaps all trainers should be made to do the same.

i never thought it was a racist comment.

He laughed and said "no, because you know its true bro" and just laughed giving me a fist bump.

We have to be careful with this racism and calling everything up, as people get fed up with it and we have to tackle the true racism that we see such as the monkey chants, bannana throwing etc which is dispicable and needs to be clamped down on hard. Putting trivial comments in the same bracket is crazy and doesnt help trying to stamp out real racism.
