I think the first JOHN SMITHS MAGNET CUP, as it was originally named was won by, PIRATE KING I think he was owned by MAJOR L.B. HOLLIDAY could have been trained by HERN, he took over the training of HOLLIDAYS horses from GEOFFREY BROOKE, if I remember rightly.

You see a few bookies including firms of Fred Binns, Harry Lawrence, Dave Thompson, Bob Beresford, Morry Peter (latter towrads the end of the film).
...and some supping of the golden ale at the end!
The first Magnet Cup was run in 1960, won by Fougalle for Norman McIntosh and Rufus Beasley. There's a 10-minute film of the race and the day here:-http://www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com/film/magnet-cup-1960(click on the picture to start it)You see a few
Anyone remember Moores Metal, Hollinshead trained it in the 80's. Used to run loads of times per season and pop up at a big price every now and again.
Seem to remember it being a big black horse that cost quite a bit as a yearling.
For a couple of years me and my mates called any horse who ran up a series of duck eggs then won, a right Moores Metal.

Pirate King won the St James Palace in 1956, and was twice 2nd in the Eclipse ('56 and '57). He went to stud in Australia for 7 years (first foals born in 1959). After that he returned to the UK, and produced a mixture of horses - including the sprint handicapper Privateer (won Portland; 2nd in Stewards Cup), middle-distance handicapper and hurdler Tortuga, and stayer Random Shot (awarded the Ascot Gold Cup on a DQ). His best horse in Australia was sprinter Bowl King.

I had backed Power Bender of presoctts and Dancing Brave for the arc in an ante post double 12's and 7/2.
Power bender finished 2nd.
Anyone remember a horse called Jazetas, think it was a Neville Callaghan horse, Lorcan Wyer mistook a winning post one day at Sandown or Newbury and dropped his hands and let a horse called Albert Hall of Hendersons wins this was mid 80s i think.
Of course i was on jazetas.

Francombe trained a really good hurdler in the 80s who refused to race on many occasions. Anyone remember?
I remmber lots of cecil horses that i backed in the 80s
Kudz Gayane Rakapohsi King (spelt wrong) to name 3.
Kudz was my 2nd horse in a 500 quid double that came up.

Rapier Thurst i think - Jimmy Fitz The Builder - revely General Chandos - Bradbourne at the time Sonny one Shine - i think won the last or was second.
cant remember the rest.
I used to love a horse called Bishops Yarn trained by Toby Balding and ridden at the time by the faultless Richard Guest.

just remembered a prolific novice hurdler who I backed many times in the mid/lates 80s, think it ran up a sequence of wins.
Mister Point.
Cant remember who trained it?.
Think it used to bomb out in front and stay there.

aventino
Aventino sent me on the road to ruin.
Had a 20 quid double on Aventino and a horse called Kalshan, won over 900 notes.
Phoned up the Will Hill Raceline for the results when i was at work.
Never been more excited when the Kalshan result came through.
Things may have been so different if that double had not come in.
Jamesmead Claude Monet Grannys Pet or Grannys Bank - trained by Paul Cole.
they are more of my favs from that great era.

onlooker its been a pretty lucky race for me,especially around the early 90s another series which i really made pay was the rothmans north/south series, the final been at the rowley mile but qualifyers at tracks like newbury and doncaster decent handicappers runing against each other on a regular basis.of course it stopped when cigarette advertiseing was banned.

Anyone remember a turnell trained horse called Tawridge.
Really promising novice chaser who was killed on track one day.
And did Sherwood have a horse called The Thatcher who again died on track.
Welsh Oak was another grand horse, a grey trained by David Gandolfo?

i stared backing horses seriously when i was about 19 when i was still with mummy and daddy.
I used to put my winning tickets in my golf bag out of harms way.
They are never out of harms way when your mother is about.
I was going to Perth races one Saturday, 85, or 86 before i went, i went to the bookies and backed a horse called Rattle Along , put a grand on , took 5s, it won at something like 13/2.
When I got home Mummy was waiting with ticket in hand. I had to do quite a bit of bullshi tting that day.
Horses running at Perth that day included Thareleos and a Richards horse called Atkinsons.

Rattle Along won at Sandown that day, ridden by the greatest (Cauthen).
Floyd was running on the flat that day at Sandown.

great thread lads. not my earliest memory but some of my favs would have to be from mid90s ish i think. i would hav been in my early teens-no superstars here but some favs. on the all weather half tone dane o neill used to ride him think he was a grey not sure who trained him but he used to race over 5and6f and come from behind,2 more off the pace merchants were gone savage at sandown w musson trained and r cochrane used to ride him to perfection.the other was statajack around windsor elsworth trained and t quinn used to get the best out of the old monkey. 1 over the jumps that ran up a sequence was fiveleigh builds i think lucinda russell trained.great memories. off topic but used to love the channel4 coverage back then with lord oaksey and brough scott-compared to emms and catt group1 vs seller. keep up the good work. spot.

David Elsworth ruled the roost over jumps. Horses like Floyd, Barnbrook Again and Combs Ditch were regular Saturday winners. Floyd led all the way in a Bula Hurdle but wasn't quite a Champion Hurdler. Very Promising won a Mackeson for David Nicholson the year after Newlife Connection for Arthur Stephenson who regularly had 3 or 4 winners at Sedgefield. The other great southern trainer was Josh Gifford whose best horse at the time may have been Door Latch. I think it was around this time that Strands Of Gold won The Hennessy and my first flat winners were Go Bananas for Ken Ivory and Al Amead, a sprinter who won a few round Lingfield for John Benstead.

I remember the Elsworth trained Hypnosis, another who used to go like a scolded cat from the off, a really exciting horse.
remember strands of gold when trained by Jummy Fitz, i backed it when it was beaten a nose by Cross Master at Chelteheham
Comeragh King was another for Fitz, a Budge horse who raced with his nose almost on the ground.
As for Gifford, the great Vodkatini and Yeoman Broker.

Cavvies Clown maybe should have won the 88 Gold Cup. Favourite Jimmy Fitz horse Trainglot Told lots of people that Door Latch would win the National only for him to fall at the first. The following year his owner Jim Joel won the race with Maori Venture. I did not have a penny on.

Floyd had a tremendous season in 1984/85. He won the Imperial Cup and then carried a 7lb penalty to win the County Hurdle at the Festival 5 days later. He followed that with a win in the Queen's Prize on the flat at Kempton. He was a lovely horse and one of my favourites.

Floyd started a very well backed 13/8 favourite for the Imperial Cup. He was again a well supported 5/2 favourite for the County Hurdle. Floyd ran 5 times over hurdles that season and won on 4 occasions. His only defeat came in the Swinton Hurdle at Haydock where he ran below par but he'd done enough for the season by then.

I seem to remember floyd being a bigger price than that (I thought I got around 7/1) for the county hurdle.
was he the subject of a big gamble or am I mixing him up with something else.

There will never be a more courageous racehorse than Floyd. Was a flashy chestnut with four white socks too. He had a fantastic hurdling technique, like Make A Stand's. Jumped to his right, though, yet still made all in a County Hurdle(!), a Bula Hurdle, the Fighting Fifth.
Won the Long Walk at the age of 12.
Going back to the start of this thread ... Chatam, an ex-French beast trained by Martin Pipe. In all the years I kept speed ratings, the two highest figures I ever recorded were for Chatam winning a juvenile handicap hurdle at Newbury by a distance on heavy ground (after he'd finished 4th in the Triumph) and a couple of years later when the same horse won a novice chase by a distance at Newbury on heavy ground.
Chatam was a really imposing horse who jumped to his left, hence a flat left-handed track on bottomless ground made him unbeatable. He won a juvenile hurdle at Worcester on his only outing before the Triumph and, of course, later went on to win a Hennessy at 10/1.

Mention of Ian Balding's Insular reminds me of another staying handicapper he trained called Cheka who won the Great Metropolitan Handicap in 1984. This race was significant for a particular reason - does anybody know why?

Fid - remember Hallgate's very high head-carriage? He looked so ungainly but it didn't stop him producing an explosive finishing burst.
Pauli - I can barely remember Cheka so you've got me on this one again! Claire Balding ride it?

CL - too young to remember the 70's hurdlers but old enough to clearly recall Troy, who was a brilliant Derby winner often overlooked in the debates about the greats.
If he'd have been an also ran in the Arc (like St Jovite, Generous or Reference Point) he would be rated higher. Despite being disappointing, he ran his heart out on really soft ground to be placed and it's as if he's 'judged' on that performance - unfair I think

Troy remains the best Derby winner I have ever seen. He made some high class horses look very ordinary that day at Epsom. As you say NG he doesn't get the credit he richly deserves because of that Arc defeat. A great shame that his achievements are measured on that one race.

1974 EPSOM handler Ron Smyth'S Flash Imp (J King) makes giant strides to score an impressive win in Sandown's Imperial Cup. The 5-1 jt fav is too smart for Staff Ingham's Legal Tender (J Uttley) and two years later would run third behind legendary Night Nurse and Birds Nest in the Champion Hurdle.

Pauli - there have been some great performances from some great Derby winners at Epsom, but the quality of the field in comparison to the norm, and the manner of victory was much better in my view to something like Shergar whose main opposition (Glint Of Gold & Kalaglow) just didn't have a fair chance to get in a blow.
Golden Fleece Slip Anchor Nashwan Generous Motivator & Authorized all looked fantastic on the day but none faced the opposition that Troy encountered.

Last Tycoon was a fav of mine, a french sprinter who went on to win breeders cup mile.
I always backed the horse when he came to England.
He used to take on the likes of Green Desert and Double Schwarz?
Those were the days when proper group 1 horses took part in sprints.
Anyone remember a stoute horse called Scottish Reel.?

Great 2 year old sprinter was Provideo, Chaplin's Club set the record for number of handicap wins in a season and I think ran twice on the last day of a season at Doncaster, once in a handicap and once in a Listed race. Mel Brittain trained Grey Desire to win several pattern races and Lefrak City was as exciting a 2 mile chaser round Sandown for Captain Forster as you'll see.

Scottish Reel was considered a Derby horse I think and may have run in The Glasgow Stakes when it was run at York and in memorial of Michael Seely who was a friend of Stoutey. Ran in red and white stripes I think.

Scottish Reel was involved in a fantastic finish to the Challenge Stakes in 1985 won by Efisio - one of my favourite ever races that wasn't a group one.
I wish it was on youtube because it's one of the most exciting finishes I've ever seen!

That was the one GED, the one that I took shorter odds early in the week of the race and he returned bigger odds on the Saturday. ACQUAINT was another that I took 16s early in the week before he won and he returned 16s even though he had won 3 or 4 days before, owner rode him on both occasions a top trainer in F.WINTER I think.
