Thanks for the kind words HH - however just to say I wasn't given the tic tac from RUK!  They were always really good to me, encouraging and complimentary which was nice.  In the end it just took up too much time away from my punting which has always been my main focus so decided to knock it on the head & I've been full time punting with no sidelines since.

Triple Trig has a point, I'd did rather blaze a trail at times but that was just eagerness to share knowledge and I felt (generally) what I said had merit, least I'd put the hours in beforehand whenever I was on.

I understand the frustrations in regards to some of the presenter/pundit combo's, best way to see it is we pay to watch the racing, which is the main thing and just treat the rest as an aside.  I really enjoy listening to Mellish and Willoughby, I know James is eccentric but he's unique in his approaches and hence interesting in my book so when those two are on in particular I'm always listening attentively and when some of the other's are on who's opinion I don't value so much I just zone out and zone back in for the races themselves.

I know it might smack as defending the establishment a bit but there really are some top people working @ RUK, behind the scenes in the production and they do a very good job - so paying for the subscription is more than just paying those 'front of house' you see every day - that might make it fractionally easier to part with the cash knowing the wealth is being spread to more than just ya man blabbing! Grin

Be lucky chaps.
Report Triple-Trigger May 16, 2012 6:43 PM BST

Report HappyHibby May 16, 2012 6:55 PM BST
i respect you for knocking the punditry on the head and putting food on the table through your punting and punting ALONE studious...

HONOURABLE imv...
Report Studious_1 May 16, 2012 7:14 PM BST
lol cape - no doors ajar! If I was that way intended I'd do a shift every 3 or 4 months to stay in touch just in case, the thought crossed my mind a few years ago but I put my faith in my ability. If the punting went wrong now I'd be too mortified to want anything to do with racing let alone talking about it on the box that's for sure.

HH it's good when it's good and hard when it isn't - my P/L from York this afternoon doesn't make for pleasant reading & I'm really harsh on myself when, for want of better words, I **** things up.

Think the main thing is I love it and that's the ingredient that helps to get down to it daily - when I'm hating the game it's because I'm overworking myself and forgetting life exists outside of racing and betting but racing is my passion (was done on that score when my old man took me the track as a 5yo) and touch wood I've been fortunate enough to make it pay for me thus far.

I definitely find that the hardest thing - work life balance - I'm 28 and feel like 58 at least twice a week - not good!Laugh

Report Triple-Trigger May 16, 2012 7:18 PM BST
£300 when losing was probably welcome, but when you would be winning more on a bet i can see how it could get to be a pain.
Report HappyHibby May 16, 2012 7:19 PM BST
yes Studious...it's a hard game is full-time punting (if you want to make it pay that is)...

good stuff...and i'm glad you shut the door fully.

the easy option was to keep the door ajar but you'd have lost your self-respect if you'd have done that imv...

I never thought i'd be saying this but i reckon Gordon Broon has done ok tonight! It's a stretch but i'm training my mind to forget his previous misdemeanours to broadcasting and treating him as a new presenter. Maybe, having more time to cover things in depth that RUK affords makes him look more accomplished than the 'crash bang wallop and here's more ads' coverage of ATR.

oh hang on studious...before you toddle off...

why is it that most pundits are scared to criticise jockeys...?

Report Studious_1 May 16, 2012 7:24 PM BST
I've looked into the option HH but due to Pete's very rare public appearance I'd be doing one day a year on about £19.99 an hour - desperate times.

Report Studious_1 May 16, 2012 7:33 PM BST
Truth be told I was never told 'don't criticise jocks/trainers etc' and when I did make inference to things - christ if you knew my views on some of the practices that go on in UK racing you'd fall off your chair and I firmly believe I'm 100% correct on them - I was never told tone it down either - so fair play to the production team for giving me reign there.

However I know when Lydia in the past (and fair play to that girl, she loves the game and isn't scared to throw the boot in, or at least wasn't & I have a lot of respect for her even though sometimes she goes on a bit and drives me mad ..) made references to bad rides like AP's @ Ascot on Jonjo's cheltenham horse - well you saw what happened.

At the end of the day most of the presenters and pundits need the wage, they have families to support, being on track three/four days a week gets you friendly with the jocks/trainers - they simply don't want to rock the boat which in turn might lead to complaints from the 'inner sanctum' - interviews not being given and general issues which the channel who ultimately employ them - don't want or need.

Not saying I agree with it, I don't but ultimately it's a harsh world out there and I can understand 'towing the line' rather than sticking the head above the proverbial parapet.
Report TRD.Racing May 16, 2012 7:38 PM BST
Why do racing folk think they are above criticism.

Hanson and co have no problem with telling it how it is on MOTD.

If a jockey rides a stinker,or rides one that looks dodgy, then it should be discussed.
Report HappyHibby May 16, 2012 7:43 PM BST
correct TRD....

thanx for the response studious...

not keen on the 'towing the line' stance tho tbh...

these people are on the telly to give THEIR view...

if they see something 'iffy'they SHOULD say so.

like i say i couldn't sleep at night thinking i'd seen something and not spoke up about it.

and as for 'putting food on the table'...

if they are as good as they are supposed to be (and they are employed because they are SUPPOSED to know what they are talking about) then they should be able to make £ from thier own opinion.

sad state of affairs really...

anyway thanx for the response studious...
Report HappyHibby May 16, 2012 7:48 PM BST

Report Triple-Trigger May 16, 2012 8:01 PM BST

Report Studious_1 May 16, 2012 8:05 PM BST
T.R.D - you're spot on and in fact in the US for example things are much more open and up for debate.  I think the incestuous nature of UK racing lends itself to a lot of the people at the top end adopting the attitude that they are above questioning - they care for their circles and little outside of them.

It's a backward attitude but it's always been there - it's the original sport of the landed gentry after all and though times have changed attitudes take longer to do so imo.

Watchit - yes I did and do frequently to the lads who I talk to my punting and theories about daily.  If you knew the preparation Vintage Crop had when it was sent over for the 1993 Melbourne Cup you wouldn't believe it and things naturally have moved forward leaps in the two decades since.

Right, before I get myself into trouble it's time to sign off - bit of dinner and then gotta work on trying to back a few horses at York that don't finish where binoculars are needed to find 'em.
