Before the likely comments of "just write Fav".....(1st time poster) .....or "The fav always wins the Hunter Chases"..(The king of spain)... the chances are this is going to be fav.....but cant help that!!
A Tricky little race with only 5 runners, but should only concern 3 of them
TOMMYSTEEL , ROMANY RYME & SOME LAD.
TOMMYSTEEL , Ideally suited by good ground, Did well last time over 25f (G/S) at kelso, winning despite nearly coming down 2 out, with jock around its neck for a few strides.. then being hampered/nearly knocked over as it recovered Beating a decent yardstick in Highland Cathedral who had won its last 3 , with Beau Traveller in 3rd.. Down to 20f here, but traveled very well in that race.
When it won its point 3 runs ago, that race was over 20f (good) ..took it up 3 out & stayed on well … & Mr T Davidson (rides it here) said that the shorter trip actually suited the horse better (P2Ps usually run over 3m) & they thought it was an Ideal type to run in a Carmel Hunter…..so must be quite nippy. 2 Runs ago it finished 4th (3m Good to Soft, with Soft patches becoming Holding.. beaten 15L) in a P2P to Cool Star ( won its last 4 Points), that was in a fast time over 3m ….
SOME LAD..making its Hunter Debut... has finished 2nd in its last 2 points, 2 runs ago it finished a good 2nd to COQUET HEAD, (another decent yard stick) Last time it finished a 10L 2nd to Cool Star….so on the face of it there should not be too much between TOMMYSTEEL & SOME LAD……….but SOME LAD is still a maiden, so maybe always just finds a one too good?
ROMANY RYME,..another making its Hunter Debut suited by cut, has won its last 2 P2Ps. ,,Undulating courses. Last time over 3m in heavy ground, winning easily, the time before, it won at Mordon over 20f on G/S…staying on & going away at the finish, .it is actually trained at the course….Owner/Trainer J Wade, owns the land where MORDEN is situated & has had RR since it was a foal. The time before it finished 2nd …..only 1L covered the 1st 3……that was over 3m at Dalton Park on G/S A course where stamina is essential!....... An improving horse but 20f on good ground around Perth could be on the sharp side for it.
Having already had experience/won in a Hunter against a better horse than these imo (Highland Cathdral), TOMMYSTEEL has to take some beating, even giving the weight away..... over a trip that suits with the ground likely to favour it more than the others.
koi - why no comments on the likely winner - reland??? although you discount this horse, others do not, and the current 8/1 will be at least half those odds come the time of the "off"

Grave dodger...on a form line through Highland Cathedral (btn 21L) it has little chance with TOMMYSTEEL Can only go on what I see....obviously you must have some inside info....something unfortunately I'm not privy to.GL

thanks koi - i know some of the bookies up there and they ae shortening it up around the country as we speak as they will not lay this at the track at bigger than 4/1 they did the same on 22nd sept last year when the horse was cut from 9/4 to 5/4 that day too (didnt win though!!)
you may be correct to discount it through collateral form but that can be risky sometimes and reland has been aimed all year at this one race so it should run well today, win or lose!

tommy steele cost me last time as until the line it never looked like winning add to that it almost fell twice in the race ... its very tempting to steam in and sometimes if its too good to be true its better to be cautious ... mind y the drift seems to have started ,,, the plain fact is i was going to back it now im having doubts yet not really sure why .

as you are all giving the plaudits to koil about his steady stream of winners,he,s something to think about, as we all no the front 3 in the market are a good betting medium in hunter chases so are obviously overbet, the golden rule of value on this forum is no matter how many winners you back if you are betting at the wrong price you cant win in the long run, koil discuss

1st TP...I dont care about the prices..I usually stick to hunters & will back what I think will win simple....no point in backing anything else if I dont think they can win! What do you call the wrong price....I usually get on at the right price IE..they shorten...bet BOG, so it does not really matter. Regardless of what you say/think...(never a positive word), why that is I dont know....I do well in hunters every year...so must be doing something right

then if you read the write up, I would expect then to fill the 1st 3 places on current form...what is the problem with that??

koi i reckon you are wrong not to care about the prices. fair enough you want to back what you think will win but you have to draw the line somewhere with whether a horse is worth backing at a given price, eg if tommysteel was 1/4 tonight would you still back him, i guess maybe subconsciously you have a price in your head that you wont go below. surely you realise that at 1/4 he isnt worth backing despite being the most likely winner..
re tonights race i would consider some lad overpriced , while hes not as likely to win as tommysteel i think hes value

The value for me here is Some Lad for a place.Fair enough it's still a maiden but I'm beginning to think that it could be a thinker. It's probably run second to better horses than the two fav's & I'm not certain it wouldn't have beat Reland when it rolled over.As I say I think it could be thinking so I wont be backing it to win but I wouldn't be surprised if it does win the race.

Ko2...you are right..obviously at 1/4 it would be a no bet at prices like that...but all I do is give a write up wether there is an odds on shot or not,,just a bit of insight into the race..
As my old man used to say...you find the winners, let the prices take care of themselves,

Strange how the hunter chase races about which the overwhelming number of punters know next to nothing generates more posts than any other single race on the day.

Tommysteel was 20/1 to beat Cathedral whereas Reland was only 9/1. Horse was form over course (2nd), experienced over regulation fences and got to be good value at 8/1. Gl all anyway

Ko2 I belive it was the first point of the season at Ratcheugh.I haven't bothered looking it up but I think it was bang there at the last when it went(may have run out}.Since ran 2nd to two good horses.Decent form & in a good stable.

Hank you Koi, I really do enjoy your write ups and appreciate the selections. Please keep them coming, I have never really given much time to Hunter chases before, but your excellent write ups have shown how true the form plays out.

Well done Koi,I couldn't have been as confident about that one. Adrian-That horse has ran like that 4 times this season, that's why I'm begining to doubt its genuity.True it has run second to some good uns but it cann't all be bad luck.

Thanx again, was losing badly all week, then managed to get some back earlier. That double, which paid out at sp returning me 808.50 turned the losing week in to a very small winning one. Can relax a bit now and tbh I only back it because of your rite up. Cheers!
