I'm hearing that the BHA are trying to supress the latest data which shows a drop off in turnover both with the big firms and Betfair. Anyone seen the figures?

I asked the other day, whether LEVY Returns are available Monthly, or only annually.
Report zilzal1 November 9, 2011 4:25 PM GMT
i would be very interested to see the next few weeks as the jumps progress, the local manageress at Laddies reports its like a morgue
Report onlooker November 9, 2011 4:28 PM GMT
Agree, zilzal - You can only see is dropping even further with  mostly Jump racing now.
Report Johnr November 9, 2011 4:34 PM GMT
The stewards seem to have been told to dish out whip bans and fines but not to announce it to the punters at the racecourse as they usually do when they have held an enquiry. This appears to have been the case since the debacle at Aintree when Ruby fell foul of the rules despite giving his horse a great ride and there was nearly a riot. I 've been racing a couple of time since and only discovered that bans had been handed out once I got home. Why has the BHA allowed it to come to this?
Report Bonza Bud November 9, 2011 4:36 PM GMT
I've more or less switched to Soccer betting these days. The horse races are so random now, not just because of the whip rules but the fact that McCoy wins nearly every race on the jumps and Hanagan/DeSousa win most of the flat. I'd like to get back to the days when you studied the form and the best horse won.

It needs a big change to get me interested again, topless girl jockies might do the trick.
Report onlooker November 9, 2011 4:38 PM GMT
That's appalling - deceitful, and cowardly.

A bit of an over-reaction. Even AP only wins about a quarter of the races he actually rides in. Helped by the fact that in many cases he is on the best horse in the race because he's the number one name who the trainer wants.

I think the good Dr may have fallen into the net...

"McCoy wins nearly every race on the jumps". If only. It would be a punters paradise.
Report ph. November 9, 2011 6:19 PM GMT
well I disagree with the rule changes but at least I have cut back in turnover, forgotten the win only and gone to the place side and to much reduced stakes.Whether its morally right or wrong I don't care,it affects my confidence,it must be happening everywhere. Those who are happy with the scenario are running bots or not punting to decent size stakes. If they are more fool them. The Levy must be affected as I know turnover is down drastically in 3 shops near me. Its a bit like punting on soccer friendlies, there will be a result but nobody is exerting themselves. As I don't bet on friendlies it can't be hard giving up the gg's in the current climate.

I just need a patch for my arm that sends a touch of arthritis to my writing hand whenever I think I've found a wager.
Report Gerry Gallbladder November 9, 2011 6:26 PM GMT
With everything else in the garden so rosy - economy, inflation, employment, etc - the only possible explanation for a drop in turnover has to be the whip.
Report onlooker November 9, 2011 6:33 PM GMT
The thread is related to turnover since the revised Whip rules of a month ago -

NOT turnover since the Lehman Brothers crash of 2008 - that started the, "economy, inflation, employment, etc" problem.
Report Gerry Gallbladder November 9, 2011 6:38 PM GMT
Of course onlooker - and the problems with the Euro and Euro Zone have been declining since the beginning of October. All the UK growth, inflation, and economic results and forecasts since then have also been stupendously good. Like I say, any drop in turnover must be down to issues with whip.
Report brigust1 November 9, 2011 6:45 PM GMT
The Euro/Pound was 1.17 when I went away a few weeks ago and it is 1.17 today. No whips included.
Report zilzal1 November 9, 2011 6:46 PM GMT
Laugh The Eurozone was the last thing on my mind last saturday at the Breeders Cup when betting SNA, however this weekend i'll be scaling down
Report Gerry Gallbladder November 9, 2011 6:48 PM GMT
Which proves what exactly brigust (other than that the UK's fortunes are inexorably linked to the fortunes of the rest of Europe)
Report zilzal1 November 9, 2011 6:51 PM GMT
You will consider each investment on its merits, if i was thinking of buying Italian Bonds then i would be looking at a better return, a bit the same when choosing to invest in a bet at the 1st real competitive meeting of the jump season under these new rules might make me have a smaller investment because of the unknowns
Report Gerry Gallbladder November 9, 2011 7:04 PM GMT
That's you though zilzal. There are thousands of people up and down the country, who bet in small amounts, and who are worried about their jobs, about inflation and about the interest payments on their mortgages. Changes (cut backs) these smaller bettors are making will have more impact on turnover than more sophisticated punters like you scaling down their bets imo
Report Deptford November 9, 2011 7:11 PM GMT
No bet for me since the debacle started
Report Dr Crippen November 9, 2011 7:17 PM GMT
I'll be surprised if the new rules have any effect on betting turnover.
A few fanatics might stop betting for a while but they'll soon be back.
Report Johnr November 9, 2011 7:28 PM GMT
If what the good Doctor is saying is correct why are the BHA sitting on the figures? They appear to have screwed up big time with their ill thoughtout intervention and killed the goose that lays the golden egg. If as a result racing is diminished as a betting medium they are ..... well .... buggered!

Report zilzal1 November 9, 2011 7:39 PM GMT
Feck me, if they're worried about current interest rates then they cant get much betterGrin unless they start paying you to have a mortgageLaugh
Report 1st time poster November 9, 2011 7:40 PM GMT
ffs, that would be the irish racing where you no 99% of the field are having a jog round, and has been hung drawn and quartered on this forum on a daily basis for years,i suppose our new whip rules changes all that, you are talking out of your backside
Report OnTheSnaff November 9, 2011 7:45 PM GMT
1st time poster,oh i forgot British racing isnt bent at all, just because you can make a shilling on irish racing doesnt mean every race is bent, have a look closer to home before making such bitter comments in future
Report brigust1 November 9, 2011 7:48 PM GMT
I only bet in the higher grade races and, as yet, I have missed any strange results. But I have seen quite a few in the standard, everyday racing where the obvious winner has, in fact, failed due, in my opinion to the whip. Not necessarilly the number of strokes, although the majority were, but the way the race has been run. Until there is further information or this impinges on the better races I will continue as I am. In the meantime I am keeping a close eye on another sport I have been aware of for a while as a fallback.
This weekend may be critical because I have a couple of bets lined up. I back losers, obviously, but I will be ultra disappointed if I feel the whip is the reason. Early days for me but the future does look shaky.
Report zilzal1 November 9, 2011 7:50 PM GMT
I read somewhere today that at last seasons Cheltenham festival there would have been Thirty Five whip offences had this occurred under todays rules

Its the Festival Jim, but not as we know it

It will be "NH Lite"
Report Gerry Gallbladder November 9, 2011 7:51 PM GMT
zilzal - you're being a tool. People are worried about interest rates in case they increase.

I would normally have some sympathy with the general tenor of your argument Gerry but the cuts have been biting for at least a year now and if turnover on Horse Racing is down then it would be illuminating if it isn`t on fobts.
Report brigust1 November 9, 2011 7:59 PM GMT
I don't know if any of you heard Jamie Spencer this evening. He said a horse he rode recently was off the bridle a long way out, he had used up his quota so had to put his whip down and was beaten half a length. I didn't see the race but my worry is that if you go on form alone it will be grossly misleading. I will have to watch every race associated with my bets to see what effect the whip had on the result.
That is 'one' of the many reasons why I think this is crazy. The whole form book will be turned upside down. Not that every race will be affected but I don't know the ones that are. They will not be flagged up.
Report 1st time poster November 9, 2011 8:19 PM GMT
upside down as in you no in advance which horses are off and which arnt, even before the new rules this forum was full of people complaining about horses not being off, jocks not been off, trainers been bent, owners laying their horses and your worrying about which horses are underperforming because they are getting a few less whacks

Mr Crisp - I know exactly what you mean. I've had numerous mortgages over the years and paid upwards of 14% at one point. Now that I'm mortgage free and have cash, the interest rates a non-existent! It's a conspiracy I tell ya!

salmon - do you think that the impact of the recession has really been felt yet? My feeling is that it's starting to bite but that there's a lot worse to come and for some considerable time. In such times isn't it normal that people turn to alcohol and gambling? I don't even have that as an option - I'm already there!
Report stewarty b November 9, 2011 9:01 PM GMT

And it will really hit hard when the winter fuel bills come in feb/march. Plus the CC bills in january, with the average being 15%??

These gas/electric companies never seem to put there prices up after the winter freeze.
