Noticed in commentary that the commentator said "they take the first of the regulation fences having already taken a few flights. What is a regulation fence please ??

open ditch,should really be called an unregualation fence ,but thats the irish for you

ok thanks, he did call one an open ditch later in the commentary which confused me a bit more

Yes, the Irish call them "Regulation". Meaning at least two have to be taken in a race. But a lot of regulations are filled in with a inviting filling of spruce, but by jaysis if you get dem wrong loike....
