Glasgow no doubt you have had a load of abuse again from michael59 . This fellah goes round every B F forum insulting people and trying to wind them up. I checked him out once by putting Michael59 on the search forums at the top of the page, so revealing. There must be about six other forums he uses that have the same opinion of michael as we have. Shame really , I think he needs help !

I always think it's a shame that there's so little about dogs history online. I guess we were too busy punting to take photographs. Flicking around Google the main historical photos of tracks seem to be on Speedway websites. Love threads like this.
Only flap I have ever been to was Ellesmere Port for a trial, though not on a race night.

you could get a bet on at warwick no probs you might get 500 on at 3s 500 on at 2s 500 4/6 500 1/3 but when you knew the dog would be close to the clock it didnt matter we put 2500 on one once and a mate was to slow getting on by the time i realised he hadnt got on it was 1/3 and i sent him back in he was moaning saying there was no value and no point backing a dog at 1/3 it won by 10 lengths
a very well known trainer had backed his dog in the race and said we had cheated and woudnt be laughing when we got the red light i pointed out it was a very good plot which had gone to plan and the man mountain stood in the racing office doorway had only come along to make sure that didnt happen

I always wonder what made the bookies stand at flaps - I guess they were hoping that 2 or 3 plots would go against each other and cut each others throats?

Dave, I went to hyde park a few times in the 70s, you needed a very good dog for there, class of graded dog very good, don't think they ran many open races at the track in the 70s from what I can remember.

Remember betting Albert Drapers quirky blue dog to win the Bolton derby when he ran as Bill Trent ? Albert had two entries that year when he ran the blue dog in the first round heats on the Saturday when the dog won odds on he then ran him again on the Monday winning more money in bets than the actual final .

Hi Dave plenty of flaps in the north east in the 70s think there's only Wheatley Hills left up there now not sure if Wansbeck is still open. 9 flapping track within 20 miles of me when I ran dogs inthe 70s, Better times dog racing then than now.

What about Merry Rogue winning the Preston Derby spring cup at Ashfield and the Powderhall sprint? Also what about Albert Drapers other dog Rodneys Parade winning the Ashfield Derby? He was the litter brother to the great dog The Stranger.

my mate once stopped his dog for 4 months so everyone thought it was useless ,it was infact a2 off sheffield ,before the days of internet to check earmarks on data to see what dogs really like, anyway he eventually got her off 7 yards start at whitwood got 400 on at 3s ,he said thats paid for our summer holiday, the dedication to go week in week out knowing dog wasnt going to win he deserved that holiday just for that

I can remember going to Southall one night and counted 18 Bookmakers standing up, all taking money.
Knew a lad who had a very good dog in the 70's, turned out to be a one man dog so didn't perform very well on NGRC tracks, but flapping, different class. He was called "Oatfield Bow". He ran a few times against "Come on Wonder", a twice disqualified litter brother to the great "Dolores Rocket". Think he won The Luton Derby, maybe Aldershot Derby, but he was an absolute machine.

We were lucky enough to have a lot of top racers and mainly ran them in opens on the flaps, especially in wales. We had at least 2 dogs over each sprint, middle and stayers trips. We would switch the dogs around and had look alikes for them all aswel, who were bottom grade flappers. One night each week we traveled away; often mondays to chesterfield,or other days to warwick, hinkley for graded as not many opens there.Highgate was great on a sunday.I remember those days well and wish it could all be repeated.

Bedford and Luton....both closed so then went to 'proper' racing at Bletchley (Milton Keynes as it became - now sadly gone) where my dad had an A4 bitch (very quick trapper) for a couple of years. Now I have to go to Henlow or Peterborough for 'local' live stuff. Prefer to just follow the decent graded stuff on RPtv from Newcastle on a Saturday night nowadays.
