The first thing everyone says before they play Stoke City is that they will try to stop them winning throw-ins. Try and fail, apparently, as Stoke won far more throw-ins this season than anyone else. However, from the 980 deliveries from Rory Delap, Ryan Shotton et al, only two resulted in goals, fewer than were scored from throw-ins by Blackburn Rovers, Bolton and Manchester United. Perhaps Stoke aren't taking long enough preparing them any more: this season the ball was in play on average for 60 minutes during a Stoke match – still the lowest in the league but an increase on last season, when their matches only produced 58.52 minutes of actual play.
That trend was replicated throughout the league, which surely contributed to this season's excitement. Whereas last season the ball was in play for 62.39 minutes on average in Premier League matches, this season it rose to 64.42 – the most of any of the top five European leagues. Fulham (67.42min) offered the most action.
Will the EPL still be the highest in the top 5 leagues now
I’ve been fascinated by the idea of “effective time” since I first saw the “gioco effettivo” statistic on RAI broadcasts of Serie A matches in the 1990s. I define effective time as the total amount of time that the ball is in play in the match, after removing all stoppages due to fouls, ball outs, corners, substitutions, injuries, goals, and so forth. I like this metric because it expresses the amount of flow in a football match. It takes some skill on the part of both teams to have a match with close to 70 minutes of effective playing time, or 40 minutes for that matter if one team is acting as destroyer.

If more action was taken by referees such as with Mignolet in EL recently and added time wasted by goal kicks and throw ins then ten minutes extra time would be the norm. Certain teams and managers are the main culprits, as with the aforesaid Pullis, Allardyce and Hughes spring to mind but I'm sure there are many others.

There should be an allowance for goal kicks, free kicks and throw ins. Any time taken over the allowance should be automatically added to the added time.

70 mins ball in play clock instead of 90, 35 mins a half. less time wasting so more ball in play time in the same 90-95 mins we get 65 mins of play in. Ban shielding the ball in the corner flag area etc. If you want to run down the clock the only way should be to keep possession of the ball and play football. Not much to ask is it.

FIGJAM talking complete b o l l o x as usual......they're all at it, and you're deluded if you think otherwise.
Hit a nerve Woodshires? Did I mention the manager of the team you support?
The managers I mentioned waste time from kick off, as at that time they have the result they crave IE a draw. The default tactic is then to bring a striker on with 15 minutes to go,you can set your watch to it.
