And we will beat all three subcontinental teams away from home in 2012.  Thought not.

I don't actually think anyone thinks so yet but we have four big series this year, including hosting saffers, and if we win them all (unlikely) then we are one of the all time great teams.  If we are unbeaten then we are right up there too ( say two wins and two draws).  Anyway my point is that most England fans hope we beat pak, sl and India away from home this year and saffers at home, but only time will tell.  If and when we lose I don't wanna hear a load of chip on their shoulder injuns saying that all us English fans thought we were an all time great team.  I am hoping that this thread will prove that most english fans are very reasonable and fully understand the significance of the challenges in 2012,  but that the "arrogant english fan who believes that england are always number one"  is an invention created by the imagination of colonials with an inferiority complex.  We are though one of the best ever England teams and justified number one in the world.

So just to clarify I hope we win all these series, and of course we can, but if we don,t Then it won,t be down to underestimating the opposition, it,ll likely be because the best team won on the day.

Would add that as an all round bowling attack englands remains the strongest in world cricket

They can knock over any side anywhere cheaply on day
Report mafeking February 6, 2012 4:15 PM GMT
the bowlers have done a great job in this series no doubt. they must be hugely frusrated to be on the wrong end of a whitewash

the 3-0 result looks terrible but let's not compare it with india getting annihilated 4-0 twice losing every match by huge margin. england should have won the 2nd test and were competitive for periods of the 3rd.
Report rohit79 February 6, 2012 5:16 PM GMT
Brilliantly done Pakistan. Beyond my wildest imagination that they would win 3-0

Would be interested in seeing how Pakistan play overseas. I think their batsman will strugle but bowlers can make up the damage so wont go overboard in praising them as a world beating side yet.

England will struggle this year and can see them dropping to Number 3. Series in Sri Lanka suddenly of interest. No surprise in what type of pitches they will be preparing. Expect it gto be some high scoring draws with probably 1 result pitch. Herath can match Rehman but lets see if Lanka play Mendis and if he can do an Ajmal. Lankan batsman capable of big scores with Jaya, Sanga and Samaraweera all average 60+ at home if I remember correctly.

But sometimes, some cricket teams attain invincibility as they don't lose or draw any test match they play anywhere in the world BUT and win them all! in a row or in succession (however you like to understand it).

Test cricket record for winning most test matches without losing or drawing but winning, anywhere in the world goes to Australia with 16 games. That winning streak was achieved by Aussies between late 1999 to early 2001 (see list below) under the captainship of Steve Waugh before Indians beat them at Kolkata (after following on, Laxman 281)!

Now from December 2005 to till 2008, Australian cricket team have won every test match they've played.. 16...that twice they reached 16 from 2000-2008

Englands best in recent times is 6

i bit premature dont you think claiming the best of all timeWink

So, if England are one of the greatest ever, Pakistan must be worlds ahead of any team that has ever played test cricket?  rotflmfao. Oh dear.

As for Greg Dobell and his Cricinfo top 5, ummmm, what can you say.  3/5 of those best ever teams he has in there are 1-2 year teams.  What the **** can you prove in 1-2 years?

The Invincibles, obviously will be remembered as their name suggests, but the reality is that is based on 1 tour.
South Africans, based on 2 years before they were exiled from cricket.  Yes, they may have produced a massive result just before that, but so what?  Pakistan have just whitewashed the number 1 team in the world, does that make them one of the best ever?
England?  Please, the debate? is all in in this thread

Only really 2 on his last that deserve to be there.  His list is like claiming the best ever bands in history are the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, A-Ha, Dexys Midnight Runners, and Soft Cell.

West Indies were a great side because they were pretty much unbeatable.  They were either drawing, or winning tests and series.  They went into a second decade of dominance.
The only reason Australia were losing the occassional test, is because they wanted to win so badly that to do that meant giving the other team a sniff of victory.  Generally that meant a dominant Australia over a decade.
16 WINS in a row, TWICE in their era.

Invincibles didn't really beat the world, just England.  Not a dig at England, but it is rare that 2 nations would be at their peak at the same time.  More likely that another team in the world would be.  Beating one nation doesn't make my list.
SA same reason, and England, well they are 10 ranking points above 5th best test team right now.  10 points?  The dominant teams would be 20 points in front of second place for a LONG time.

As for not sure you can be putting oz in the top bracket without a lot more evidencfrom Mafeking:  Why do you need evidence?  This thread is proof itself that you don't need evidence to make ridiculous claims...    Excited

On paper saffers arguably the best in the world, only down side is lack of quality spinner and reasonably weak lower order batting.  If Philander keeps his form then they're a truly fearsome fast bowling unit.

REsults are results though (and I'm surprised by steptoe's statistics below, though I don't doubt them) and they seem to keep drawing so many series.  when they beat SL the other week (despite losing one at home, and to lose at home to SL even in a single test these days is very poor) think that was their first win in 3 years at home, and only their second full stop.  At the end of the day you have to judge a team on results.  Can't argue with England 8-1-1 over last 3 years, if you insist on taking away the bangles results then we're still 6-1-1, surely that makes us world number one, though of course the recent travails in pakistan make it a slightly tenuous grasp.  IF saffers win 3-0 in NZ then they become number one, and I can't argue with that really.  Personally I think the ranking system is about right and by and large whomever they put number one is the best team in the world.
Report Deadly Earnest February 9, 2012 9:25 PM GMT
Why have the last two numbers ones been beaten 4-0, 4-0 in India's case, and 3-0 in England's case then if that is true Mr Dillan?

Great to see the Aussies lose like a number one team should lose last night.  Tight finish, blown out of the H2O by a couple of late incidents, and that against the World Cup holders, and with several from our best xi missing.

Rather than smashed to nil by a middle ranking team in 3 one-sided matches, when you have all your best players on the reservation.

Take a bow Australia.

England: learn how to lose like a number one ranked team.

I do however think that teams fear coming to England now.

I keep listening to the people talking about how better the 20/20 comps and formats are in India and Aus etc..

Well we are the number 1 Test team, 20/20 world champs and have won 10 in a row in ODIs so the county system cannot be all that bad

Our best sides can compete against the IPL boys as Zum showed in the CL last yr (missing quite a few of their best players), An EPL of around 10 teams would be very strong imo if we could get it sorted and the england players played.

Dont really know how it would work. Guess we start with the grounds that are up to scratch and get good crowds and work backwards...

I must say that Black Caviar has let herself go a bit since this thread was started hasn't she? Now, as per, please post your usual self justifying nonsensical diatribe........

So the thread wasn't stating that England were on the verge of being the best in history?  2 years?  2 years is nothing.  When Australia were on the verge, they went a decade proving how good they were.  England were on the verge and they now rank near Bangladesh.....  LaughLaugh

This is the worst English team I can ever recall Angry

It has been noted that the thread creator, and creator of many a thread on the Australian forum in days gone bye, has been regularly logged in to the forum and failed to reply.

Zero credibility. This will be referred to when Mug Dylan does eventually crawl back from under his rock

Bangladesh breathing down their necks in ODI, and Afghanistan next in line in T20Is.  Of course, this merely boosts their reputation, as the only way they get close, is if they are also among the best sporting teams in history.....

BANGERS.  Oooh yeah.....  The documentary to their rise to be a sporting goliath is nearly finished.  Must watch program from all reports...
