But does not the system reward the arrogant and deluded? How many honest, straight talking politicians ever get near the front benches?
It's a collusion in deception with the Electorate though.
Firstly, there a re huge swathes who vote the same way as they've always done and therefore can be taken for granted. I've always been in constituencies that have a solid majority for one party so my democratic effect has been negligible in my lifetime. Point being, you can take these people for a ride and they just stare out the windows (or lick them, more likely).
Then you've got this charade that we can have decent public services, armed forces, no potholes in the roads without having to pay for them. Any candidate approaching this issue with honesty wouldn't get a sniff of power.
We can't even speak honestly. We are allowed to say 'Asian Rape Gangs' (which they are not) but not 'Muslim Rape Gangs' (which they are). Colonise language, tell people which words they can and cannot use, irrespective of context (Folks I give you the phrase 'The 'N' word' used extensively by grown adults) and you end up dancing on a pinhead discussing syntax rather than homelessness and literacy levels.
Nick Clegg's political career ended when the Liberal's had to support the introduction of tuition fees in a coalition government where they were the minor party. Instead of apologising he should have fronted it up and gone 'Honestly? This is real-politik. If you wanted free tuition you should have voted for us in larger numbers. You didn't and so I'm having to retain some degree of honour by taking collective responsibility for this policy.' Honesty - which I would have respected but he'd rather apologise.
