Opinions opinions, poor, average, good, brilliant all have been mentioned about Shawshank, that will never change.
Study's fav film is Herbie Rides Again so do not take what he says at face value 
It's an ok film I suppose but nothing more than that. I think it's very corny and completely forgettable. 4/10 and that's me being generous.

It takes some doing when it tops all these film lists voted by people who almost exclusively have only ever seen it on the small screen, I doubt that is the case of most of the other films high on the list.

It was badly promoted maybe for it to be a failure at box office this happens.

sorry rob, it is a ****g awful film, nauseatingly sentimental in the extreme, utterly unbelievable and wholly undeserving of all the plaudits it receives... pretty much like every other film based on the tortuously tedious and overrated works of stephen king

I refuse to watch the film again after reading mister Badger's comments.
I didn't watch it until 1998(ish). I couldn't believe I'd missed out on such a gem, although I have made up for it since.

TBH i think its a good film but seen it a lot of times.Midnight Express is also decent and not sure if seen The Jericho Mile but Alcatraz dos it for me

Would rather not say but her snoring was no 29 & eating a whole jar of picked gherkins ( large one ) in three minutes flat twice a week was number 17 the rest I would rather keep to myself

I also saw it at the cinema when it first came out

No Fishy not on my list of great films, people say Shawshank is a melodrama but Green Mile is well Miles worse in that department.

Well anyone who likes a decent prison film needs to see The Jericho Mile, another film I doubt most people have ever seen.
And yet, bar Vertigo (even more inexplicable) it's supposed to be the best film ever.

You may be right bodil, but it is difficult to take seriously the opinion of someone who posts "bastards" on multiple threads without rhyme or reason.

Samuel L Jackson is excellent in it.
It certainly isn't the best film ever made. Not even close.
It's a pretty straight forward but very engaging Stephen King story (as they nearly all are hence their wide appeal) presented in a well paced but pretty straight forward way, i.e. a good story should not be confused with a good film and good film-making.
Freeman's narrative elevates it, but not enough to make it great. It's good though, and still enjoyable on repeated viewings.
Father Maguire is right in that Un Prophet is a much better and far more complicated story and a much better film.

Raging Bull is a good film.
But Let's not get too poncy, a film is a film when it's a film, all good films have a good storyline, Shawshank Redemption is a good film, you don't have to have flashy special effects and deliberately convoluted scripts just to validate a film's status as a film. When every scene is watchable, it's a good film.
