Superb call on 'Muriel's Wedding' from the wise Cap'n. That film near killed me, and would also surely melt the stoniest heart.

I watched it Friday week ago as well with my kids who didn't appreciate it

I have stolen someones review from amazon cos they sum it up well enough for me. Tin Men by has no special effects whatsoever; nobody gets killed or maimed;there are no drug-dealers,pimps or ****s;no car chases; no gratuitous sex scenes & no goggle-eyed aliens ready to take over the world! What it DOES have is Danny Devito & Richard Dreyfuss and ALL the supporting cast in stupendous comedic form. And I don't mean juvenile brat-pack slapstick either (that would be difficult as the average age would be about 50!). OK it wont have you belly-laughing loudly but the comedy comes from the superb banter between the characters and the very engaging storyline that is based on an on-going battle between Devito & Dreyfuss who are rival 'tin-men': aluminium or "aloo-min-num " sidings (cladding) salesmen, who after a disputed car accident seek to exert revenge on each other. Why THIS film hasn't won a dozen Oscars is a mystery!
WATCH IT!

I can't really single one out but if I had to save only one of my DVDs from a house fire it would have to be Glengarry Glen Ross

Brassed off, one of my favourites always brings a lump to the throat, marvellous performance from Pete Postlethwaite as the band leader and Stephen Tompkinson as his son, great film.

Toss up between The Thin Red Line and LA Confidential.
The latter wins it for today. Outdoes most of the original era films noirs. Acting, script, pace, cinematography, sound all spot on.
Didn't even like The Thin Red Line until I watched it on my own, which was the 3rd time. The first two were with mates and a girl respectively, and I (and they) couldn't get on with it. One of those films that you need to utterly immerse yourself in - total darkness, no distractions.
Will watch the director's cut of another honourable mention later - Cinema Paradiso. I adore it for its heart, and the fact that it's a love letter to cinema itself, and, of course, because of Ennio Morricone's beautiful score.
Others that are up there include a slew of Coen Bros films, Ran, Sunshine, 28 Days Later, When Harry Met Sally and Taxi (French version). But that's just today.

Once Upon a Time in America- Absolute masterpiece, 3hrs 49mins. In the USA they cut it to just over 2 hours and showed it in chronological order, it got panned by the critics, after they saw the proper version they changed their minds.
The Godfather, and Godfather2. (3 was diabolical and should never have been made, just greed)
For comedy, I would suggest one that hardly anyone has heard of- "How to Get Ahead In Advertising" with Richard E Grant starring, some incredibly funny lines in this.

I saw the 'director's cut' of Once Upon a Time in America the first time I saw it, thank goodness. I can't begin to imagine how rubbish it would have been at half the length and in chronological order.

I'm with Liam, Once Upon a Time in America with Godfather I and II are beautiful films with great plots, fantastic scores and some superb acting. All three are ten out of tenners.

Exactly, I read that an American critic, having just watched the shortened version, label it as one of the worst movies of the 80's, after seeing the proper version he said it was the best.

I agree. I actually prefer Once Upon a Time in America to The Godfather films.
I'm in the minority of people who doesn't hate The Godfather III. On it's own, it's actually an OK film, albeit with an appalling performance from Sofia Coppola. It's just nowhere near as good as the first two, and I suppose a lot of people feel that it taints them somehow.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, I loved it when I was younger and must have watched it over a 100 times by now.
My 5 year old loves it now, I have shown him a lot of films from 'my era' and this is the only one that has really grabbed him. 31 years ago He likes Star Wars too, but prefers the recent trilogy to the original trilogy.
So good old Indy gets my vote...

I shed tears at the end when they were all putting the stones on his grave. A truly remarkable piece of cinematography.
I agree with Rabbit, about The Long Good Friday.
A great film with arguably one of the best lines ever written.... " What I'm looking for is someone who can contribute to what England has given to the world. Culture, sophistication, genius. A little bit more than a hot-dog....Know what I mean ?"
From a comedy point of view, it has to be Life of Brian.
From a score point of view, it has to be Gladiator. Zimmer is a genius.
Other favs of mine are... Midnight Express, The Graduate, Michael Collins, The Wild Geese.
My favourite film has to be Schindler's List. I shed tears at the end when they were all putting the stones on his grave. A truly remarkable piece of cinematography. I agree with Rabbit, about The Long Good Friday. A great film with arguably one of t

Once Upon A Time In The West is definitely the best western I've ever seen. Henry Fonda is a class act. I can hear the musical score now (has there ever been a better one?). In the first 30 minutes of the film there's only about 10 to 20 words spoken

Guinness, I took you by surprise there with The Life Of Brian then I take it
For me it's the best film of all time, here are the runners up for what it's worth.
Oh Brother Where Art Thou The Big Lebowski There Will Be Blood Scarface Chopper True Grit (The Jeff Bridges version of course). Not just saying that for the hell of it as I have watched both the films recently and I prefer the Coen Brothers adaptation. The original is very 'hammy' for want of a better word in my very honest and humble opinion. That's my tuppence worth anyway for what it's worth.
