Just putting this up now as we've had some success at the last couple of World Cups digging out some over-priced candidates, especially among the weaker nations.

Free-kick & penalty takers, defenders who are dangerous at set pieces, especially for teams who may only score one or two goals before being eliminated are of particular interest, there's usually a few ricks.

Not many firms have priced up yet, obviously waiting for the final squad announcements, but all early suggestions, especially from experts on Costa Rica, Honduras, Iran etc are most welcome.

I'll bump this fred when necessary.

No goalscorer is always worth a look.

K. Honda for Japan 11/2 at 365, great price. He was their top scorer during the qualifiers.

Cheers for starting this thread- wouldnt have thought to look otherwise!

If Ronaldo gets injured/suspended for Portugal then anyone could be their top scorer.

Raul Meireles plays regularly in central midfield for them so 100/1 worth a tenner....

I also had a big wager on Jack Wilshire at 66/1 to be top England scorer a few months ago just before he got injured!
However he made the squad and is 5/4 against to make the starting eleven in the opening game, if he does then the price looks good to me, I backed him earlier in the season at 50/1 to score two in a game v Marseille ,one of my luckiest bets of the season admittedly !

What price is Baines top scorer for England plz?
Report Sergei_Rebrofl May 28, 2014 12:01 PM BST
Does anyone know who the most likely starter up front will be for Portugal?

I see Postiga was the top scorer in qualifying, you can get 11/1 on him being Portugals top scorer. Might be tempting considering Ronaldos only previous world cup goals have been a penalty against Iran and a ridiculous fluke against North Korea.
Report webboncfc May 28, 2014 12:41 PM BST
Toss up between him and Hugo Almeida isn't it. I thought they might opt with Almeida but 11/1 seems a good price for Postiga if he is first choice.

OK a few speculative lobs I've gone for listed below, all for teams who I doubt will score very many.

Think there must also be some some value among the more fancied countries who are in tricky groups & have a very short-priced fav: Portugal, Italy & France the most obvious examples where Ronaldo 1/2, Balotelli & Benzema both 13/8 look very short to me. Any ideas?

Australia: Tommy Oar @ 20/1
Japan: Yuyu Osako @ 8/1
Ivory Coast: Gervinho @ 10/1
Iran: Jalal Hosseini @ 50/1
Russia: Andrey Samedov @ 20/1
Chile: Charles Aranguiz @ 40/1
Croatia: Mateo Kovacic @ 40/1
Algeria: Madjid Bougherra @ 33/1

£4 on Eduardo Vargas @ 119/1 and £6 on Edin Dzeko @ 59/1

Thats all my bets for the world cup other than little accys

is it correct to think that the best chance of backing big priced winners in this market is from the teams which i expect to only get a few goals at most and that the short priced favourites have better chances for the teams which will go further in the tournament?if so has anyone noticed a set piece/penalty taker from the lesser teams who doesnt play as an attacker?
Report shinedog June 9, 2014 10:26 PM BST
looking to pick out a wee treble on this market. lukaku, kerzakhov, mandzukic and dzeko a few that catch the eye
Report dazmacccccc June 9, 2014 10:28 PM BST
a treble sounds impossible.isnt lukaku doubtful?who wud start up front if he was,be bryne?really fancy hazard as top scorer for belguim
Report shinedog June 9, 2014 10:46 PM BST
A tough bet no doubt but far from impossible. Aye, he's touch and go for the opener. Reckon he'll make it with them not playing til' Tuesday tho. Not too sure who would start otherwise tbh
Report starfish June 10, 2014 5:33 PM BST
Daz, that was my original approach but the prices generally suggest the firms know the likely pen & fk takers. So I've gone for some defenders who might score from set pieces & midfielders for teams where the strikers aren't that dangerous.

The Tommy Oar bet is my best as he's certain to start on the wing and I don't think Oz will score more than 2 goals. Should be no bigger than 8/1 IMO.

After much deliberating, finally settled for Benzema, Dzeko and Cavani. Treble pays around 18/1. Hopefully give me a decent run !

Now wondering what the rules are on own goals in these markets (guessing I should have checked first). Hopefully they will be ignored!

Gervinho's goal very welcome after a slow start. Not impressed with Osako.

Hosseini misses an absolute sitter for Iran's 1st goal Cry
