Spain 9/2 (Cor, SJ) looks far too big.  Their qualifying group is Czech Rep, Scotland, Lithuania, Liechtenstein.

The only thing against them, paradoxically, is being seeded at the finals.  I assume Poland & Ukraine will be seeded and the other seed will probably be Holland or Germany.  So being seeded costs you the chance of drawing what are likely to be 2 of the weaker sides in the tournament, and only helps you avoid 1 strong side.

For starters your money is tied up for two years on a 9/2 shot and i doubt they will be shorter when the tournament kicks off. They could end up with key injuries an injury to Villa in this tournament would have ended their chances. They will also have a tougher group than they did in this tournament and will be up against countries in better form than this time round
Report bushy July 14, 2010 12:38 AM BST
I think they could well go off at 3/1 or shorter, depending on who else qualifies.  We shall see.

Report tanstaafl July 14, 2010 12:20 PM BST
Honestly, that is a shocking tip.
Report liveitlarge July 14, 2010 10:49 PM BST
why is that shocking have you actuually watched spain play
Report tobermory July 14, 2010 10:58 PM BST
5/2 would be the price if they played it tommorow.

Hard to see much changing dramatically in 2 years.

Awful awful bet with 2 years to wait, ffs...
Report neill d July 15, 2010 3:36 PM BST
It is not an awkul bet they will piss it. Germany and Holland the only foreseeable challengers and Spain are open to as much improvement as anyone with the fantastic way they that their young players are schooled.

^ You say they will piss it, then next breath give 2 teams who will challenge them.

Copa America in Argentina to look forward to first - taking place July 2011. I enjoyed watching the likes of Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay at this WC. Love the team spirit and passion for playing for their country players from these nations exude. Not to mention their technique and quality on the ball. Throw Brazil, Mexico and the hosts into the mix and it should be a cracking tournament.
Report liveitlarge July 15, 2010 10:44 PM BST
neil d is right its worth doing the the **** bet cause if spain win euro 2012 you you can lay them at a much shorter price here to win in 2014[;)][;)]
Report shrewdbury July 16, 2010 10:19 AM BST
Its awful because you should factor in giving your money away for two years...of course.
Report neill d July 16, 2010 2:52 PM BST
Spain are already ahead McGrumpy, and are open to at least as much improvement as the rest, therefore I don't see the rest bridging the gap,get it.
Report shrewdbury July 16, 2010 2:53 PM BST
I'd want at least 20/1 to bother tying up my funds for two years. And even then it would have to be a stonking 20/1 bet.
Report neill d July 16, 2010 2:55 PM BST
They will trade shorter than 9/2 come tourmnament time, look at it as a savings account if you must. I could see them being 9/4 at the off. We all saw how ordinary the Dutch were and the Germans are being overhyped, they beat an Argentinian team with no midfield or defence and an English side who are technichally inept.
Report supersavo July 16, 2010 3:49 PM BST
I backed spain months before the WC, just putting 5 ers and 10 ers on every few days, thinking of doing same for euros.
Report shrewdbury July 16, 2010 6:07 PM BST
Yeh, a savings account where they could end up taking money off you! Laugh

I backed Spain among others liveitlarge.

I'd want at least 20/1 to bother tying up my funds for two years

The tying-up-funds argument is purely dependent on your own personal wealth and cashflow.  If you have lots of money available for "investment" then (a portfolio of) long-term value bets isn't such a bad option - say you might be able to return 7% over 2 years elsewhere then you need to discount the odds you are receiving accordingly - 9/2 becomes more like 4.14/1.  If the bet's still value, take it.

Are you seriously saying you wouldn't take 10/1 on Spain 2012, shrewdbury?
Report shrewdbury July 20, 2010 6:18 PM BST
Obviously the bigger a price gets the more tempting it would become. But I'd have to consider how much you could turn over in other bets in all that time with the same funds.
Report bushy July 20, 2010 10:15 PM BST
Because you're such a consistent winner?  In which case sparing a bit of your substantial bankroll on a long-term value selection surely wouldn't be a problem?
Report shrewdbury July 20, 2010 11:14 PM BST
Well if you were talking a small bet then yes it isn't that much of a problem, but if a bet's 'great' then it can't really be a small bet. Hence it isn't a 'great' bet, especially at the price.
