Barty and the BBC pushing the 'women's tennis has so much depth' narrative

lol what a spin, there's is no depth in WTA, it's called much of a muchness, everyone can beat everyone, 7 different winners in a row at Wimbleodn

there is simply no stand out players of the level and calibre of players in years gone by a la Serena, Venus, Henin, Graf etc.

Even Iga can only dominate one slam.

A lot of good players, but no great or stand out players anymore which is why the WTA lags behind ATP, there's no real and consistent rivariles to sell the sport in the same way the big 3 or 4 did in the men's.

it's like they all club togethether in the team meetings behind the scenes and are all instructed by the big bosses as to what to say and what to push to convince the public of something that's not true.

Kind Regards.

But that's why I find it better from a punting point of view, and also enjoy watching it more . The unpredictability element is bigger than mens game.

Nothing is as boring as when you have one player winning everything, but imo ideally you'd have something like the big 3/big 4 where you constantly have the same names at the semi final stages which creates rivalries, but from there you will often have different winners. WTA had a bit of that last year after years of "anyone can win" post Serena peak, but it has now reverted back to randomness with Rybakina struggling with illness/injuries and now Sabalenka too.

Barty and Osaka leaving tennis at their peak and pretty much at the same time was a unique and unprecedented catastrophe for womens tennis and it hasn't actually quite recovered yet.

I remember at that time the media basically circled round Iga expecting her to step up and fill the void rather than just being a consistent and reliable clay player.

Ever since then there's been an attempt to create an apparition of a dominant force/rivalry that isn't actually there with the fake Big 3 and to a certain extent Coco. It would make more sense to accept this is an interval between eras.

Great players will come again to the womens game but not yet.

Gauff's record against Iga has long since gone the same way as Sharapova's against Serena's.

As far as consistency goes, yes Barty left a big void. With her, peak Naomi, Iga + Sabalenka, Rybakina and Gauff in the mix, we would have a nice crop of top players and less chance for randomers to win Slams.
As far as marketability goes though, Barty is about as marketable as a Vegemite sandwich outside Australia.

2022: Barty won AO, Iga won RG, Rybakina won Wimbledon, Iga won USO
2023: Aryna won AO, Iga won RG, Marketa (!) won Wimbledom, Coco won USO
2024: Aryna won AO, Iga won Rg, BK (!) won Wimbledon...

it's just at Wimbledon. short grass season, different conditions at grass warm-up tournaments (e.g. Eastbourne windy) compared to Wimbledon conditions, some matches played under a roof and some without a roof, some matches played on small outside courts and some played on huge showcourts, centre court and court 1 grass plays different, number 1 seed and world number 1 doesn't have a game that suits grass. all of this makes it much more unpredictable. it's the best slam of the year on the women's side because the market can't price it!

Going into the US Open, where only 3 years ago a qualifier won, you'd look at the draw and would not be surprised if dozens of different players won the tournament, where's only a small handful of ATP players can realistically win. JM is correct imo, the two ball bashers and the clay wh0re are not the real big 3, the ball bashers in particular are most definitely not special talents.
