Coco Gauff leads a super ambitious USA tennis team, for Paris Olympics The American team will arrive at the Olympic tournament with all its superstars a truly complete roaster
The mens team is Fritz, Partyman, Eubanks and Giron. I wonder how many casual US sports fans would recognise these superstars if they turned up at the front door doing a barbershop quartet.

you were telling me just the other week it was rare for players to miss the olympics and those that do are no hopers.
as I was saying it's been happening every olympic cycle post 2012 and this year is no different, players want points and prize money (dropped after London) when established players really can go one week every four years without it and have the great chance to play in the Olympics, but they're so dumb they can't see it's value and what a unique opportunity it is, they would rather play Washington because a 500 is really going to help the careers of Sabalenka, Rublev or Jabeur, more fool them imo, Bencic and Puig will probably dine out on their golds for the rest of their lives because they wont be winning a slam. National assocications do actually offer renumeration for their athletes so they wouldn't be out of pocket.
I've remembered it was Gulbis who coined the phrase 'tennis tourism' at the Rio Olympics in 2016 - stolen by that mug journo in the other thread who called Emma's reasoning 'impeccable logic' a thief and a simp.
Kind Regards.

If it stays this way I don't consider myself proven wrong. Lots of the no's are Russians/Belarussians who won't be able to represent the country and thus this will hurt the appeal of the Olympics to them. Ons is a mystery though, as is Keys, but both are injury prone players so maybe they know their bodies best. Agreed about some players being shortsighted financially.
In order to tell if the stripping of ranking points has really hurt the Olympics for tennis players we need a hc slam in non-pandemic times with no weird viruses in the area and all players being allowed to represent their country. If those criteria are fulfilled for Los Angeles 2028 and there are still lots of withdrawals or if all are fulfilled with the exception of the Russia situation and big names that are not Russian/Belarussians still pull out I will admit that I was wrong.

not trying to prove your wrong it's just obvious to me, as said before there were 17000 testers at the Rio games to deem it safe and still some big names didn't wanna go, 2021 there was covid but that didn't stop the draw from taking place with full fields in mens/womens/all doubles, some just made excuses not to go, 2024 - Russian/Belorussian already don't have flags next to their names in any tournaments and haven't for some time. Gulbis basically said it, no rankings/prizes=tennis tourism, players stopping by to play what he sees as an exihibtion, but coming from a s*** country like Latvia he probably doesn't appreciate the Olympics. 2028 will be in Los Angeles but players might actually have a different outlook there because it's America covered heavily by American broadcasters which may seem less big names pull out because of sponsorhip pressure in a more lucrative market.
Can guarantee though big names are gonna pull out of Brisbane 2032, can't see so many of them going all the way down there for no ranking points or prize money.

That is exactly what you do, I've literally backed up everything I've said by citing the safety at Brazil (17000 testers), to the fact Covid was not an issue in 21 to everyone who filled up the draw and was also deemed safe, now those excuses have gone, there's new one's for 2024 and there even more flimsy, just face it some top players simply want points and prizes otherwise they think it's not worth their while - Cam Norrie has ever said so, there's nothing to debate here.

Regarding the 2016 Olympics, players also didn't go to US Open 2020 even though it had rankings and prize money. When they are concerned about safety, many will stay home. Covid was not an big issue in 2021, players withdrew because without the crowds it's not the real Olympic experience. For players who can not represent their country this will also mean the Olympics become less attractive. This has nothing to do with the same players playing the regular events since representing your country at tour events/Slams isn't the appeal like it is with the Olympics.

2020 US open was valid, 2016 Olympics was not, not sure how many times it needs to be said The local organizing committee for the upcoming Olympics in Rio de Janeiro said on Tuesday not a single case of Zika infection has been reported among 17,000 athletes, volunteers and staff during test events in the run-up to the games., the main reason given by players in 2021 was 'covid restrictions' i.e. the bubble they had to stay in, not 'Olympic Experience'. Washington is a 500 event with 350k top prize money, that is why the Olympics is not appealing to some because the Olympics offers the square root of FA - and that was a deliberate move by the ATP and WTA because the Olympics is an ITF run tournament that runs parallel to their tournament and they obviously didn't like that they would be attracting less notable players.

https://www.itftennis.com/en/events/olympics-paris-2024/entry-list/ what a mug Dimitrov for not playing. Maybe Alize didn't let him stay in the Olympic village. No women on Team Serbia No Paula? Did she not want to or was she not qualified?

Badosa actually wanted to be there but was 118 and too low to qualify, protected ranking covers her for two events and she chose the slams, which is fair enough, though playing Paris Olympics at Roland Garros is once in a lifetime.
Dimitrov simply chose to play Washington which is shameful imo, an established player skipping the olympics to play a run of the mill event he can play any year.
Don't think any Serbia woman is ranked high enough, Danilovic is 100+

Thanks. Shame about Paula and that she hasn't managed to her ranking up due to injuries. It's a tough choice to pick your PR spots when you want to get your ranking up. She might not be around for the next Olympics. Surprised about Dimitrov, Olympics are generally big in Eastern Euopean countries from what I understand but apparently not for him.

Similarly to Wimbledon a tough start for Shnaider playing against someone she has 0-3 record against, including this year. Difficult to predict, and certainly not as easy as the odds suggest. Will sit out, but if forced would be more inclined to take the 13/8 Cocciaretto.
