The Ukrainian was all at sea in her first set against Sakkari, bageled and looking set for an early plane home. Then the weather gods intervened and the rest is history.

Rain breaks that change the shape of matches at slams. The most famous perhaps being Goran getting rain breaks over multiple days to beat Henman in a match he'd definitely have lost, then going on to win the title he believed he was destined to win.
Watch Marta's celebration after winning her first round match. Listen to her speech.

We talk about Marta a lot on here. She's one of the game's biggest characters, passionate, a real believer. I think she believes she's going to win here, which is kind of ridiculous but then so was Goran winning as a wild card.
She's recently backed up the talk with winning her first 250 of course.
Not the worst run of games to the quarters. Then in theory plays saba, Rybakina and Iga in the last three matches but plenty of ifs and buts about at least two of them getting to that stage.
Could easily be Donna Vekic in the final. The top half is a couple of shocks away from being paper thin.

Obviously and justifiably a long shot. Quarter winner 25. Finalist 150. Winner 254.

Also she already makes a lot of waves and achieves a high profile with the platform she has. It would be interesting to see where she would take that as a slam winner.

If she'd been in the third quarter I'd have said no chance btw. The strongest threats are in Q3 Rybakina, Kvitova and most of all Ostapenko. Osty is coming in off the back of a good grass season. Marta is relatively unproven on the surface (but her game is a work in progress and could develop I think into a threat on grass). Osty is the player that also is showing that belief that she's here to pick up the title. But that's personal belief. Is belief in destiny a greater force for what it would mean to a warring country?

Marta in Q4 only has to face one of the three in the SF.
